Hi all,

I took delivery of my new little rack to house all my audio equipment in today. So I decided to move all my rack servers and networking gear into my old flightcase.

Now people who have seen my other threads may remember that it was like spaghetti junction behind my rack:









So I decided to use some cable ties and drill some holes in my rack to thread them through and this is the finished product :D










I'm pretty please with how neat it looks now :) any thoughts?

An obvious improvement there.

For this sort of thing I prefer Velco ties as things tend to stay neater in the long term. With tie wraps the first minor rearrangement tends to result in a disaster area.

I'd avoid bundling power and network cables together.

That must be a horribly noise rack when it's all running. Just the 2U Intel one up from the bottom would make more noise than I'd be willing to put up with (I had one briefly, 4U and 5U kit is much easier to tame).

Yep I would have used velcro ties, but I didn't have any, and it needed doing last night, that setup is going to be farily permanent tho, so shouldn't be much of a problem.

They're not bundled together much, the only place is at the bottom left where they run parallel with the power cable for about 10cm's which should be ok.

Yeh it's noisy....VERY. I've found the worst culrpit is actually the HP enclosure, which has a rattly fan :( and also 13 73gb 15k RPM old HDD's do make quite a lot of noise.... I've just learnt to put up with it.

They're used as a VM store currently attached to my Hyper-v server. they're so old and they're only 160mb/s SCSI so my max transfer rate within a VM is about 60mb/s :(

but i got 14 of em for 40quid and the enclosure was only a quid so about the same price as a 1tb drive :P and I get to play around with RAID etc :)

but **** me they are noisy, you should hear them spin up! :eek: sounds like the rack is about to take off...

That sounds slow. What HBA are they plugged into, and what's the HBA plugged into?

It's never going to be massively fast or power efficient (which is why it was so cheap), but it should be faster than that.
 
Should replace all those with SSD's - that'd speed things up a bit and cut the noise level - might cost more than £40 though... maybe... lol

Looks a million times better though mate! I can't cope with cables - that's why I don't run any rack mounts/multiple single effects, I just have an old Digitech RP7 Valve and a Boss MT-2 for more grunt :)

I have used Guitar Rig 4 though, which is quite an impressive program... but you're limited by the quality of your sound card.. and I've got onboard lol as I managed to blow the input on my audigy :( (unplugged the cable from the guitar and sat it on the desk with the cable trapped under the case... came back to find the plug resting against the case and since then, no sound :( so I assume it 'shorted' (whatever the proper term for that is with audio...) and killed the input

mmm yes, that would be nice... maybe if I win the lottery... ;)

Cheers, yeh before I haven't cared but I was so bored and it needed doing so I thought why not?! :p But the audio stuff is going to have to wait as I don't have any time/patience to do it now :/ However we are building a new outbuilding soon hopefully (which will then become my studio) So I can route all the cables exactly how I want/need them :D

Well all the rack stuff I have atm is for my studio equipment, which is easiest to rack :) I need to get a new guitar amp/fx pedal tho :( My line6 spider 4 is **** to say the least...

Yeh I have used guitar rig, and yeh very impressive, however I still prefer the sound you get with a nice cab/amp and a mic. Virtual amps/cabs just don't have the same sound IMO. Yeh it does all depend on the soundcard, I have a pre sonus Firestudio Project which is a recording interface more than a soundcard. If you're really wanting to record guitar you should get an interface. M-audio do some pretty good 1 and 2 channel ones :) (it will also sound a gazillion times better than your onboard and/or the audigy :) )

Amplitube is also quite a good virtual amp emulator.

Nice and tidy there mate nice one!

I've been meaning to do some tidying up around my desk area... I always have good intentions of doing so every time I do a computer upgrade but then I just forget about it lol need to get my finger out now =P
 
Looks much improved... I bought a bunch of cable ties the other day.. Only problem is that now I re-do my cable tying every few days because I think of new and better ways I could do it... Getting a bit OCD about it all unfortunately!

lol happened to me when I accidently placed an order of 1,000 at the bay.... soon as they arrived I ended up using over 100 in the pc and then I'd cut some off and re-do it a diff way but still neevr happy lol... really gotta start doing better cable management all round tbh
 
I never buy cable ties (smaller ones anyway) in batches of under 1,000. If you buy them in bulk they're so cheap you don't need to worry about how many you use.

I recently bought back one of my old amps because I hated it's replacement - a Roland Cube30 - while a nice amp in itself (it's one big COSM amp simulator) it just wasn't as good as the Laney TF200 it replaced... so I got one of those on the 'bay for £59 posted(!!) courier for £9 for an amp! gotta love interparcel!
