Grab a cup of tea, you're gonna need it.

(quite a few folks on OcUK have helped out towards this so I wanted to do a little thread to show you guys where it's all going, this thread is in no way, shape or form asking for anything)

Meet Dave. He's the gentleman on the left of this photo (this photo is 6 years old, can't find a newer one right now):

He's been a member of our little gaming community for longer than most and is one hell of a decent person. Dave's wife lost her terrible battle with cancer on the 9th of January. Dave is retired. This means that Dave now has a huge gaping hole in his life which we can potentially help to fill.

Dave doesn't own a gaming PC, and we all know how awesomely amazeballs your life is with a gaming PC. Women want you, men want to be you, that kind of thing.

Enter everyone.

I started raising funds and begging. We raised a little bit between us all and managed to snag a brand new 1060 6gb in the box, so we were off to a good start. As this little project went on, the creative juices started flowing more and more, with more suggestions and ideas from those involved, and it's developed in to what you're seeing here today.

The initial idea was to simply build Dave a PC and hand it to him. I wanted this to be more than simply a giveaway however, so I floated the idea of building the PC with Dave, so he learns a bit, has some fun and hopefully kick starts a nice hobby for him. Problem 1: How are we going to hand all this stuff over to Dave?

What's the most controversial word in the gaming industry at the moment? LOOT BOXES!

Done, loot box it is.

Quick scout around at work, and VOILA!

LOOT BOX!

I happen to know someone who loves doing art stuff, and is quite good at it. Quick to-and-fro on the Facebook Messenger, and he agrees to paint our logo on it provided we give him the cans of paint. Done. The loot crate will be with me tomorrow, I'll probably drop it off over the weekend and he can paint it.

We have also been given a 32" 1440p Acer monitor by a very generous member on here, together with some fans and other bits and bobs from someone else, we've also bought 16gb of 3000mhz DDR4 with loads of RGBness for his RGB fix (Dave loves that kind of thing). Today we ordered a 2600x with an Asus B450-F motherboard.

Thanks again to the generosity of some, we have been given an MSI summer promo pack free of charge, along with some other goodies which will become clear in the final reveal. I've no idea exactly what's in the promo pack but I imagine it looks something like this:

Problem 2: This crate is huge. Like really, really huge. No chance all this kit is going to fill it up. AHA! It's a loot crate right? I have a few bits and bobs lying around the house, but that's still not enough. Enter my wife (hurrrrr) who works at a famous high street department store and has connections to get discount. Good discount. A few phone calls and a bit of begging later, this is what we have:

Jam, marmalade, Maker's Mark, wine gums, toffees, biscuits, tea, truffles, and chocolate. Off to a flying start then.

And of course the only bit of hardware we have at the moment:

kiLwW17.jpg

On top of this I have a few less glamorous items to add to the crate, a 4-gang extension lead, some Cat5e cables, a pair of old homeplugs, a few USB drives, a screwdriver set, some cable ties and a torch.

We still have to buy:
SSD
HDD
PSU
Case
Keyboard

I'll keep this thread updated with progress, we're hoping to drive up to his house soon and do the reveal and build (his sons are involved too, we're not going to just turn up like that).

Stay tuned, and thanks again to all those who helped out :)

Diddums, what exactly is happening here? Are you updating us on stuff you're already doing or asking for support or ..?

I mean, I like some guy in a box with a hidden car and a piece of paper in his hand as much as the next guy but what are we doing here my dude?

Also, strong 4th post from guy who joined Wednesday :D

Just updating issall. A few folks on here are involved and I wanted to spread a bit of positivity amongst all the rubbish lately so I thought screw it, why not eh?

Plus, any opportunity to stand in a box with some paper.

Noice, got it now.

So, uh ... that's you in the box?

* adds to scrapbook

Correct. If Goldenballs (@Thekwango ) lets me borrow his hotpants I might do a little pose for you if you ask nicely ;)

Anywho, more goodies for the box:

A headset. He has a pair of Astro A50s so not sure if this is going in the box yet or not, we'll see:

Some stickers for extra sticker bling bling:

An MSI Mascot dragon thing. This little fella will be able to hang on his monitor:

And moar snacks:

There are a couple of other goodies which I can't divulge yet but this is all 100% free, it's genuinely heartwarming to see that people like this are still around :)

Thanks again, you know who you are ;)

So is there a way to give support?

Absolutely! We're still in need of a few goodies so if you feel like chucking some loose change in the pot, drop me a trust.

Also, we're organising the reveal in Ipswich which we're going to keep fairly low-key but after that we're dragging him out on the town for a night of laughs and an alcopop or two, so if anyone's in that neck of the woods and feels like saying hello to all us clowns, let me know.

We haven't decided on a date yet, but it'll be a Saturday night in March :)

at the top of the op you should add a link to your wanted thread. might help with 'footfall' to it and bring you more goodies.

I could, but I don't really want folks to think I'm taking the mick :)

Biltong and/or snapsticks?

Good call actually, hadn't thought of that!

Another box arrived:

Which contained some lovely goodies:

We'll see what gets used and whatever doesn't will be put in a box and stuck on the MM for anyone to have, rather not let all this generosity go to waste :)

the quote 'those that matter don't mind and those that mind don't matter' springs to mind. it's for a good cause so i'd just stick it in anyway

True! I think we're pretty much done now though :)

Any use? Brand new in opened box. (I started to build it up before deciding I wouldnt use it.)

I also have my old NZXT h440i in white but its quite modded and my daughter has scuffed the window on it... Potential fixer upper?

Thanks Lewis, I'll keep this in mind!

Moar lootz arrived today:

Painter is on the fence, might not make it, we'll hafta see.

What an awesome thing to do!

condolences to Dave. This might just push me to get more invovled with your community nights, I take it this is ForeverGaming. :D

Correct. When we say we're the best gaming community in the world, we're not joking :D

This video is when we had a pair of Astro A50s delivered to Lee (@GazzaGarratt ) whilst we were messing about on GTA.

Also, our PC side is growing fairly steadily, we have a Discord server 'n errythang, just like the cool cats

I have managed to borrow a van from work for the weekend, so we're driving up on Saturday to meet at the Burger King near his house, after which we'll all head down to his place for the reveal and build, followed by dinner at Frankie and Benny's and drinks afterwards. This project has by far been the biggest and most ambitious we've ever done, but it honestly couldn't have been for a nicer person. The generosity and kindness shown by all involved has been on a whole new level, seeing it finally culminate on a tangible level really does make me feel a little warm and fussy inside. Apologies for the threads being all over the place, but due to the time constraints I needed to push many buttons simultaneously so it got a bit messy. Once the reveal is done I'll do a nice new organized thread with the photos and whatnot in it.

Thanks once again to all involved, having so many people offer things has been truly awe inspiring, and a special mention to Overclockers for allowing me to use this forum because we can't use FG for obvious reasons, and a special shout out to @StigBourne for his help as well.

The reveal thread will be soon, stay tuned!

Aaaaand we're done. Dave was pretty ill so we ended up building the PC for him, @Greboth was a massive help, Dave is immensely grateful and asked us to convey his gratitude to all. We got it all up and running, installed Steam and redeemed a few codes for him. We're now enjoying a beer before heading Frankie & Benny's for dinner, and after that it's time to get messy.

We have a fair amount of photos and footage to sort through which will likely be done next week, I'll post it up when it's ready.

Once again thanks to all involved, it was one hell of a project and one hell of a day but thanks to the kindness and generosity of all involved we really cheered someone up who was having a bit of a rough time.

You're all legends
