Project Irony "Glutton For Punishment".

It does not cut its way through metal, it smashes its way through.
Might be running it too fast then. You're probably looking at about 200rpm max for that - and that's scary enough! Are the teeth sharp enough? If not, you can sharpen them with a diamond file - just don't breathe in any of the dust. Although not so easily if they're hollow ground (concave) like the picture suggests they might be. You might be able to just hone the flat top edge to get them sharper whilst still retaining the concavity which should help with chip clearance.

Oh they are sharp ! it took about 20 seconds. The reason its so smashy is the width of the teeth. It has to be 3mm.

That's quite a lot of tooth for a hand drill! Only plus side is there's so many of them that it's unlikely to cant over much!

Yeah it is brutal but I was fed up with paying good money for supposed HSS hole saws that could not cut one hole in metal !

I bought it to do Sr Vr. It needed four holes cut in it, and it was thick old 80s steel. Did a superb job on that too, even though it leaves you with marks in your pants lol.

OK so given 2k is no joke I am well protected lol.

Coat one, just a mist coat. Am downstairs because it reeked so bad and I didn't want to sit there masked up lol.

OK coat two down. Coverage is now almost complete. Looks shiny, but is indeed satin. I just took the pic as soon as I had done painting so it looks gloss.

One more to go.

Looks good from here! :D Nice to see responsible use of PPE too. Congratulations, you're NOT going to die today! ;) :p Not being sarcastic - for a change - there's just so much on YouTube and other sources where it's demonstrated that an appropriate attitude is "Aw, I'll be fine!".

The ones to worry about are both what I have used. Etch primer (laden with acid, and not the fun type) and 2k. The latter hardens in your lungs :O

I learned this whilst painting 2k clear on a bike. I had the mask on, but left my arms uncovered. After which I could feel it slowly shrinking and hardening on my arms. Not a nice feeling lmao. But yeah you don't want it in your eyes either. Whilst it means I have to paint basically blind it means that at least with paint I won't screw my eyes up any more than now.

The third and final coat is now done, and the loft is now closed off until I return on Thurs, maybe Friday.

The hardener is an irritant too...although pretty much anything is if you put it in your lungs or your eyes! :D

I had the tiniest whiff of etch primer when I did the initial paint job on Asteria's innards. Wasn't nice. Didn't bother with 2K for the black but my God it stank anyway when I did a couple of big parts and forgot to turn my ghetto extractor on. Had to plastic seal the door because it was wafting into my bedroom.

It’s the hardener that’s so dangerous. It goes into your lungs and sticks and your body can’t break it down. Really nasty stuff tbh.

I’m orf ‘ome in a couple of hours. Bought the Auf Weidersen Pet box set so it’s rest time :D

The only puzzle left to solve now is where to put the RGB and fan hubs.

Fans came in yesterday.

I then spent 25 minutes standing in the peeing rain waiting for the cab that supposedly turned up twice. Meh. Back tomorrow.

I've always loved these Alienware cases, but never pulled the trigger and decided to buy one. These are my all time favourite type of PC builds, where you have to adapt and modify things to make them work rather than just buying off the shelf parts and sticking them in a case. Fantastic work and looking forward to seeing more updates on this. GREAT WORK.

It's been fun to be honest. Well, for the most part any way.

One thing I am not that happy about is the power button. I kinda overheated it soldering on the wires (bad eyes) and it has gone a bit mushy. So I ordered 10. That and the LEDs will go on a CNC acrylic board so I need to measure up the one in there. May need washers if the new power button is larger, but am going to go with a HDD LED also. My 2008 Area 51 had one and it looks cool.

Just arrived back. I am over this rain. Cost me an extra £5 in the cab too because of the sodding flooding all over the place. Bring on summer FFS.

Bring on summer FFS.

Ah yes...and then we can whinge that it's too hot instead. Change is good as a rest and all that! :D
You'll have to look into one of those digital microscopes for soldering. I've got a headband magnifier (with light) but for decent magnification you need to get your head close enough that the frame tends to hit stuff. The gold standard would be surgeon's magnifiers as they're essentially a combination of magnifiers and a telescope so you get the magnification but you don't have to be so close up and breathing in all the solder fumes. Tend to be pricey though.

Doesn't really help me tbh. I have problems with focus, brought on by some of the meds I take.

The LEDs and switches are here. LEDs? I can't even see them. I have ordered some 3mm round ones. Will explain it all tomorrow when I start drawing up my PCB sorta thing.

OK mega update !

I got it down around 7pm last night. Put it back into one piece.

Fit the PSU

Fit motherboard and cooler.

Mount cooler. Ross, it did have plenty of clearance in the end. Now it has more airflow haha.

Cut oneself, get blood everywhere.

Mount top intake fan.

Just a quick note here. The 92mm fan has to come out. The GPU is bigger than it says it is. It does fit, but not with the fan, and it comes out of the front of the metal as I suspected it would.

Any way, moving on.

This bit took some serious measuring. I wanted the hubs (fan and RGB) in the top. I had to snap out a piece of plastic inside the top but it worked. I then measured it all out, stuck them together, mounted them and etc etc. There is space behind it to put all the wires. Well, once they are tidied etc.

And then a loose fit of the top to make sure it works. It does.

And the day ends at 11:55PM

However, going back in time. Before all of that I mapped, designed and created the new power button PCB.

That should be done by tonight I hope. I can then fit the front.

Cut oneself, get blood everywhere
I think you mean "Signed one's handy work"! :D
Are we as far back as the era of razor-edged cases or did you not debur (shame on you*) your new hole?

*For those not in the know, you do this as a courtesy to the next guy....'cos there's a good chance that's you!

It wasn't just one cut. Or just one hand. I took off a left knuckle and cut two fingers on the other hand. Made a proper mess fgs.

S'alright. I've just arduously designed, printed and assembled a case for a PSU complete with power inlets, knob for variable voltage etc....and then realised I've designed nothing for taking the power out to the motor. Sometimes we all have bad days. As for the bleeding...that's what superglue was invented for! :D
