OK guys the time has finally come to send my beloved i7 930 to silicon heaven and upgrade my rig. Now I know this section is generally just used for the actual building part but I am going to have all the parts discussion in here too just so it saves me maintaining 2 different threads. Once the build is complete I will compact everything to save folks trawling through pages and pages to get everything.

As for the project name it's a long running joke between myself and my better half, she refers to my PC as "The Mistress" because she/it is the other woman in the relationship and it has just stuck :D (not to mention it's damn funny!).

Now with that said shall we continue?

The Budget

Roughly speaking I have £1,000 for this build but I can probably get another £200 to add to it if needs be so please stick the the £1,000 mark (a few quid either way isn't an issue though).

The Plan

Basically the plan is to pull my current rig out of the dark ages and bring it more up to date and hopefully be less power hungry (i7 930 & GTX480 use a lot of power).

Below is a list of current parts that will be transplanted over to the new machine:
  • Antec True Power 850 PSU (though I wouldn't mind a new one if the budget allows it).
  • 2x 1TB, 1x 2TB HDD.
  • Optical Drive.
  • Mouse & Keyboard (though I would not mind new but will see what is what).
  • BenQ G2420HD 24" Monitor (1920x1080 is what I use all the time).

The Specs

This is where you guys come in really, it's been quite some time since my last build so rather out of touch somewhat on newer tech (especially SSD's). I am no stranger to building PC's though so that isn't a worry.

Here is a current spec list I am looking at but could really use some help/advice here:
  • i7 4770K (I do video encoding from time to time though not often so could probably drop this to the i5 but I really really don't want to do that).
  • Gigabyte G1 Sniper (great little board by all accounts with decent on board audio to save the pennies on a sound card).
  • nVidia GTX780 (if the budget will allow it which I doubt, I only game at 1920x1080 but I want to be able to switch everything on).
  • Samsung 840 250GB SSD (not a clue on these but they seem extremely popular around here).
  • H100i cooler (anything better out there?).
  • 8GB 2400MHz RAM (16GB if I can just because I have 12GB currently so don't want less :D)
  • Not a clue on the case really, I currently use a Antec 1200 which annoys me no end these days so want something better.
Thinking of a black and green theme since I prefer nVidia cards over ATI and the Sniper motherboard has flashes of green already so would work quite well but I am open to pretty much all other options.

Once all the parts are figured out and everything I will be posting up pictures etc and of course will keep you all updated on what is happening. There is no real time frame for this build and I am not adverse to buying bits from the Members Market if needed to keep costs down. I hear that nVidia are due to release the next generation GPU's so I am hopeful that in a few months time (March) then the current 780's will come down in price.

Also I have the funds available now (most of it anyway) so I can pick up parts as/when/if they are on a blindingly good offer or something like that (same thing for the Members Market).

Anyway folks that's about it from me so have at it with specs, ideas, comments etc etc!

The Pictures!

I had a couple of packages arrive...

iafg4np.jpg.png

So as one does one set about unboxing stuff and here is what I found...

nD6p15k.jpg.png

946UeKC.jpg.png

Now for a picture of what is being replaced (my beloved 930 OC'd to 4GHz and has served me faithfully for 4 years or so)...

HYkUmWq.jpg.png

Started pulling it apart since I wanted the PSU out of it, wow was there a lot of dust in there!

EBGqPj0.jpg.png

Here is said PSU along with an assortment of cables...

qTNNaZ7.jpg.png

Me covered in dust, well me leg anyway all from the HDD cages from my Antec 1200 case...

8S4Ou8H.jpg.png

Now a snapshot of the chaos that was/is the "office" (it gets worse), in the image you can see 4 HDD's 3 of which will end up in the new rig since I have a SSD for the OS drive...

h9Dr0sh.jpg.png

Better picture of the HDD's, the one in the top left corner will no longer be used as such but will probably end up as a external storage drive or something not really decided yet..

XXrO61y.jpg.png

Ran my Boogie Bug through the washing machine and I think it has ruined it somewhat but will see how it goes...

9bOWxTe.jpg.png

Nice clean desk for the new rig to sit on assuming you ignore all the scratches etc lol...

Z4jEYMA.jpg.png

Unboxing of the motherboard...

jPuGMJx.jpg.png

Now for the CPU cooler...

8Uj8hpO.jpg.png
bmWZpc9.jpg.png

Motherboard installed in to the case...

NZii4YA.jpg.png

Now the RAM...

uoIK3NU.jpg.png

Now the CPU cooler is installed coupled with 2x SP120 Quiet Edition, before anybody says anything yes I know it's not great to have the fans blowing down in to the case since all the heat will be dumped in to the case but I ran in to clearance issue with the RAM. However, I won't be going for stupidly high overclocks either since my old system was at 4GHz I would be happy with that or a bit over (4.2GHz maybe) to keep the temps down nice and low...

uasrspi.jpg.png

Most of the cables are done along with all the HDD's in place, the system has a SSD (OS), 2x 1TB and 1x 2TB drives...

RSxAegF.jpg.png

Now this is where it kinda goes pear shaped to say the least! My Antec 850 died on me for some unknown reason so had to get another PSU which was the XFX 850W Fully Modular Pro Edition...

ASkLKBB.jpg.png

So got that installed and all ready to go when BOOM! I hit the isolator switch on the PSU and the machine comes to life without me using the main switch on the tower! It stays on for like 2 seconds then promptly dies accompained by a loud pop/crack sound and a distinct smell of burning :( So I yoink out the power cable pronto and throw in a cheap PSU I have just to make sure my rig is OK, which took replacing the power lead for the tower and monitor so it was fried as well thanks to the PSU going. Anyway took it back to where I got it from and got a replacement PSU though not the same brand since they had none in stock so went with the Corsair RM850 Fully Modular PSU...

Pesfv1f.jpg.png

Anyway finally after 3 days of messing about she lives!

Qx1jwmE.jpg.png

A couple of shots of the rig with the new PSU from both sides, for its size it wasn't too bad on the cabling though I did have to be a bit creative as it turned out since the panel would not fit back on but I got it sorted after a few alterations...

VlSlKOO.jpg.png
9bvl8wB.jpg.png

Here she is now sat in situe with Windows 7 installed! It has seemed like this has taken forever and a day to do with the problems with the PSU etc but I am really please now with her, the speed difference a SSD makes it just outright insane!

z5OYRSG.jpg.png

Overall I'm just happy she is up and running again, I have sorted out the RAM timings etc so my RAM runs at 2400MHz (which is very nice I must say). Not done any overclocking or anything yet and temps are around the 30-40 mark roughly speaking while idle, not really stressed the system too much as of yet only played some DDO for like an hour or two and the highest temps I saw were low 50's I think maybe lower.

Anyway thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed the ride!

@ hakank68

Not a big fan of the 540 to be honest, it's just too wide for my desk and I don't like having the optical drive on its side but other than that looking pretty good :). I get what you are saying about the RAM and I could always just have 8GB for now and get another 8GB kit further on down the road so that is an option.

@ implosiveturnip

Sorry bud but mITX is out of the question, I have too many drives I need to fit in to the build (4 HDD in total) so would be hard pushed for space. Also I have no interest in even attempting a full water cooling loop far to much money and effort for what it is worth (for me personally).

The spec list I gave in the OP is flexible depending on what people think etc nothing is really set in stone except for it has to be Intel/nVidia I just can't stand anything by AMD/ATI. Thanks for the idea's though guys keep them rolling in :)

Stoner81.

Doh! Didn't even see the cooler in the bundle! *feels rather sheepish*

Not sure on the Shinobi though since the HDD's go the traditional way and was hoping for a case which does it the other way so all the cables are easier to hide. It does fit the green theme though rather nicely and the other side of it is that where my PC sits I can't see through the window anyway so even if it is a mess in there it wouldn't matter that much.

Decisions decisions!

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gainward GeForce GTX 780 Phantom 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £379.99
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor & Corsair H100i CPU Cooler Bundle £349.90
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £137.99
1 x Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z87 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £119.99
1 x Avexir Venom Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17200C9 2133MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (AVD3U21330904G-2CIG) - Green Light £79.99
Total : £1,077.46 (includes shipping : £8.00).

This is what I have so far, I swapped the SSD for the Samsung one since there is a large difference in read/write speeds.

Just stuck on the case really and I am tempted (though I hate to admit it) to drop the i7 and go with i5 just to save some cash since I probably won't use the i7 to the fullest so it seems pointless but I am used to having the power there as/when/if it's needed.

Stoner81.

Yeah I am starting to think the same to be honest, dual cards won't be an option since I only game at 1920x1080 which is plenty for me (plus can't afford a monitor which does 2560x1440 :D)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gainward GeForce GTX 780 Phantom 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £379.99
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor & Corsair H100i CPU Cooler Bundle £349.90

1 x BitFenix Shinobi USB3.0 Gaming Windowed Case - Black/Green £59.99
Total : £1,141.94 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Gone back to the Shinobi since it's a cheapish case but looks decent.

Stoner81.

Now that you mention it I have been thinking about the colour scheme etc because like I said earlier when the PC is in normal use I can't see through the window since there is a wall there (with a gap for airflow) so I am beginning to wonder about other RAM and motherboards but I do like Gigabyte boards etc and it would be nice to get some 2400MHz RAM rather than 2133MHz though I doubt I would see much in the way of difference between the two in all fairness.

Will have a sit and think on it time for dinner and then gonna go play some of the games I have picked up in the Steam sales :D

Stoner81.

Thanks for all the input guys this is why I love this forum! As I said I'm not in a huge rush so I can get the most for my money but if stuff is on some stupidly good deal then I will probably pick it up.

Since I only game at 1920x1080 would it be worth dropping to the 770 instead of the 780?

Stoner81.

True, well worth noting though.

Considering you won't have to do anything to the Ronin.. (another good case choice (under £100).

Now that is one nice looking case! I don't really fancy doing any modding of cases I just don't know how and don't want to ruin a perfectly good case.

@ Danny75

The price difference between the 780 and the 770 is huge but will see what I can get together. Will put together another build tomorrow sometime (hopefully).

Stoner81.

Just typical! Our washing machine has died on us so I'm going to have to sort out a new one so this project is semi on hold until I can some more funds sorted out. I still have some left but won't be able to buy everything at the moment :(

I will keep you all updated though :)

Stoner81.

Thanks nniitt :)

Been mulling over my options over the last few days and I think I have a semi answer... I am going to get the case, CPU, cooler, RAM, mobo and SSD sorted out and the new video card will have to wait for more funds (plus new cards should be out hopefully so here's to hoping that prices drop). Until I get the new video card I can transplant my current GTX480 as a temporary measure.

Still struggling on the case though I do really like the Ronin case just can't find it in stock anywhere :(

Stoner81.

I tweaked your spec Doomedspeed a little and here is what I have come up with:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £269.99
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £149.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87X-SLI Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £97.99
1 x Silverstone Tundra Series TD02 Liquid CPU Cooler £83.99
1 x BitFenix Ronin Tower Case - Black £69.95
1 x TeamGroup Xtreem LV "Frost Edition" 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit £59.99
2 x Corsair SP120 Quiet Series High Pressure Low Noise - Single Pack (CO-9050005-WW) £13.99 (£27.98)
Total : £759.88 (includes shipping : FREE).

No new GPU but as I already said had to buy a new damn washing machine :( so will transplant my 480 over to the new rig in the mean time until I can rustle up some more funds. I also replaced the fans you specced with Corsair SP120's since they shift more air according to the specs and I would like this system to be quiet (my current one sounds like a jet plane taking off when the fans ramp up).

Stoner81.

Quick update on this, I have ordered the parts (see post #2 for the final spec list or the post above this one) just having to now wait until the case comes back in stock so everything now on hold until parts arrive :(

Stoner81.

Parts have arrived and it is mostly built now but my PSU has died so need a new one. Does anybody have any suggestions for one? It needs to power everything I have currently and eventually a GTX780 I will be overclocking too.

Stoner81.

PS - I think a Superflower 650W would suffice though might not leave much room for all the other stuff I have.
