Sony has announced Project Morpheus, its virtual reality headset for PlayStation 4. It's a prototype for now, but Sony intends to develop it further for a commercial launch.

Morpheus is a visor style head-mounted display that works with the PlayStation Camera to deliver a virtual reality experience. Inertial sensors are built into the head mount unit and the Camera, which the headset requires to work, tracks head orientation and movement so as the player's head rotates the image of the virtual world rotates in real-time

◾Component: Processor unit, head-mounted unit
◾Display Method: LCD
◾Panel Size: 5 inches
◾Panel Resolution: 1920×RGB×1080 (960×RGB×1080 per eye)
◾Field of View: 90 degrees
◾Sensors: Accelerometer, Gyroscope
◾Connection interface: HDMI + USB
◾Function: 3D audio, Social Screen

Holy smokes, this thing looks insane. Possibilities are endless and not just gaming. Apparently they are working with NASA on a VR mission to Mars which would be cool.

Slightly worried the PS4 might be a bit underpowered but heck something like Skyrim (PC medium settings) would be epic and doable.

Anything under £300 sign me up, guess it will be enthusiast driven at first and once it becomes cheaper more mass market appeal.

Not so keen on the design aesthetics, needs to be more PS4esque. Less of the whites and gay tennis band thing. Is a prototype so probably will change.

Have been working on it for 3 years, PS4 designed to work with VR from ground up hence light bar in controller and camera.

Game demos will be available tomorrow (or today given its past 12am in UK)

EVE Valkyrie is playable on the current dev kit, which is exciting. There'll also be a special build of Thief being released; not the entire game, but some key sections reworked for VR support. There's also games called The Deep and The Castle, the latter of which will let you use a PlayStation Move to control a sword.

I posted about this in the drive club delayed thread, perhaps this is another reason DC was delayed so they can use this tech and release both together.

A games developer familiar with Sony's plans, who wished to remain anonymous, recently told CVG that Evolution Studios is currently working with the device to simulate a cockpit view on its PS4 title DriveClub.

I'm not excited about this initially but could easily be converted by testing. Biggest and most serious put off me is it doesn't look like I could wear my headphones with it. Sound is the most important thing to me

I am very interested in this. I will buy one but only f it performs well enough, with enough game supporting it and isn't too expensive

Does sony realise they've named it after the god of sleep and dreams? Surely they don't intend for it to put you to sleep

Sounds interesting, though it rather more depends on how its integrated into games rather than the hardware itself

It's half of 1080P per eye so theoretically it should be similar effort to rendering 1080P.

I suppose they're going for a dreamworld/Matrix theme with the name.

Seems interesting and lots of possibilities but I can see it only being bought by the hardcore market and not the casual market. For £199 I would jump in just to try it, but anything above that no thank you.

The price needs to be right for this for me to consider getting it (plus decent game support), hmm dunno, like above maybe £199 but I can see it being around £250 imo at least.

edit: I'd also like a headset that's universal though if I was paying that kind of money so I could use it for things other than just PS4 for example, don't want multiple VR headsets, which is why I am more swayed by the rift atm but time will tell

if it works smoothly it could be good, looks extremely uncomfortable tbh.

i cannot see any headphones so where do you get sound from? especially if your going to be twisting your head side to side so having sound come from speakers would be stupid as it wouldn't be correct with your orientation.

so do you need to buy a headset/headphones too or will the latest revision have them built in? obviously not a huge issue for most but imagine trying to play BF4 with this on your head, plus a headset. i cannot imagine it would be comfortable at all.

price is going to be a major point as well, too expensive and most developers will just ignore it as hardly anyone buys it or they won't support it properly enough to justify having one.

i'll wait for proper reviews, guinea pigs testing them, and possibly even a second revision which irons out the niggles before thinking about purchasing these.

also if none of the games i play support them then it's a no brainer so large support would be a must also. also battery life has to be good at least 3-4 hours.

They mentioned headsets in the brief I read, can't imagine it would be great wearing that and a headset.

That's assuming they have it set up in a similar way to the Oculus Rift, which I would doubt. I think it's more likely to be 1x 1080P display per eye due to the 90 degree FOV mentioned, it implies they aren't using image scaling and optics to increase the FOV, which is how the Oculus Rift does it.

No real details given, dates, price, even no talk of a dev kit being wildly available, this has the makings of a turkey tbh, I can see this being under £300 either.

Lol really?

The reason we haven't got more info yet as this is still in the early stages, and this announcement was mainly aimed at developers, it was announced at the game developers conference after all.

It's far too early to call it a 'turkey', hopefully we should get more info at E3 and can make a better judgement then.

the OR ones are $300 for development kits but they look even worse for comfort, looks like a bulky sat nav strapped to the front of your head.

again i cannot see headphones with the OR either so again it's going to be extremely ridiculous if you need a headset on top.

personally there is no way they would be dumb enough to launch these for £300+ IMO, they just wouldn't sell at all. the console itself costs around that much.

he's a HUGE MS fanboy, had MS announced this he would have been saying the complete opposite ;)
