Yesterday Microsoft held a secret Project Natal event, showing off the upcoming technology to various people from the technology industry and celebrities, one of whom was TV presenter Jonathan Ross who leaked a possible release date for Natal via his Twitter Status:

“OK. Before bed. Natal on X Box impressive. Not quite there yet i think but tye have til october and if they get it right…skys the limit.”

Of course, Ross’ twitter status could be refering to Microsoft’s development schedule. An October goal could be in preparation for a November launch.

Microsoft replied to the speculation stating “There have been no further announcements on the release date of Project Natal – it remains scheduled for Christmas 2010.”

Why not check out the playtest video below while you fill with excitement for the upcoming device:

At college, we had 2 guys from Codemasters come in to talk about networks and stuff, somebody asked about project natal and he couldnt say much but he basically implied that it sucks.

I think it has a lot of potencial - but I really hate that bouncing balls demo :p

Apparently, by the time it's released, it will have a reaction time of a tenth of a second - which will appear almost instant :) Hoping it will crush the Wii :D

I remember when people inc yours truly mocked the Wee for being utterly crap, before it was even released. Hell I said it was all a gimmick...

You was right, it sold well. Nearly everyone I knows has one. I rarely enter a house that doesn't have one. I rarely know anyone who actually uses the thing after a first few plays though. A genius bit of marketing, but still a gimmick buried under masses of pap games.

Mine is a launch wii and its been on for no more than 20 hours, the wii points are still on the account to be used. Thats why the attach rate for the wii isn't that high.

Natal might be awesome but I'm a lazy gamer so it won't appeal to me other than a odd play when casual gaming friends come round.

Of the 3 motion controls this is the least interesting to me, the Wiimote has been in the public domain for years and seems like no one will catch it. Natal only interest me in the minority report and voice control stuff, the games at the moment look pants and apart from depth perception its an Eye toy. The PS3 wand thingy does all the minority report/voice control stuff already as has been used in some PS3 games already, eye pet/singstar. The wands look like an upgrade on the wii mote and talks of the wireless control pad seems like a sensible idea, only the price i think will be an issue with this. I would expect 3rd parties would find it easier to port Wii games as such to the PS3 wand as can be used in the same way.

Are there any videos of this with games apart from this dodgeball thing? I reckon the PS3 one and the 360 one will end up being very similar to be honest. PS3 one you will use wands instead of your hands but I can see the same game being released on both consoles with motion controls, or just ports of Wii titles. Will only really be interested if we see some sort of different gaming experiences.

Here is the Jason Bradbury one:
I am convinced someone spiked his drink with some narcotics whilst he was at the event! (55 second mark)

I think natal is interesting and will be a success but it has far too much lag to be suitable for any "hardcore" games.

I like the idea of motion sensing technology because being a PC gamer mainly I am not the biggest fan of controllers for FPS games, but I am sceptical of this. in an fps for example, how would you walk or pull the trigger?

It seems like it only really works for games where you stand still and move your arms and legs about like a fighting game, a bit limited.

I talked to a top industry bod about it a few weeks ago and he was really excited by it. Thinks it's the future etc.

It seems to be a bit lame that they got all these celebs together to play Natal using just that bouncing ball game. It seems off all the stuff they showed off when the device was originally announced that the ball game was the most boring and generic. Yes, like Jason says, you can see his moves on screen, but at the heart of it, the game is no different to what you could have played on an Eyetoy game on the PS2 last generation.

He did say that it was apparently an older build and I can see he was still skeptical, rather than being all out amazed. However it again raises the question of why get them all together to play one game, from an older build?

I disagree here. There have been a bunch of crappy games, but also some very decent ones that either wouldn't have worked on any other console - Lost Winds, Wii Sports/Resort - or are just better due to motion controls - Metroid, World of Goo. They may not be to your liking, but between family and friends i've clocked 100's of hours playing Wii Sports alone.

When used well the Wiimote is superb - maybe Natal will be too.

It's rare the Wiimote is used well though - it's shoehorned into every game just like the touchscreen function on the DS.

Expect tons upon tons of shovelware for Natal.
