Project - Not to everyone's taste - WIP Pic heavy

My son has been involved in some recent builds I've done for friends and his interest in PC's have grown. I had quite a few bits and pieces left over from the builds and a very basic system In my shed. We toyed around a similar idea a few months ago but the project came to a stall.

He recently came back to me and asked if we could do some modding, We talked it over and this is what he has came up with.
These Ideas are 100% his and for 12 years old I'm Bloody impressed. The work is a 99% his aside from some of the cuts etc. He started with some drawings and we discussed what was doable, initially the project revolved around an X theme, blow holes and side window would be X shaped etc
we had one case to work with, previously we had messed around with it and tried inverting it to have the PSU at the bottom like this

we stripped it down and set back to work,

Since had a little clean up

The 9600gt (top left) given to us was DOA with a little clean and new thermal compound , its back to life

Time to paint, we practised on card sheets till he got the hang of it. we stripped down the test fan and set to work. nice little finger mark where he snook out to see if was dry

Next day we a quick test build, some of parts hadn't been used for a looong time.

I love the white on black on the rear section.

played around with some s****s of sleeving .

Top blowhole cut, was a little rough around the edges

we had a brainwave to use a cpu fan duct that we hacked up, looks great with the purple he picked.

We spotted some great flexible mesh in a local all items for a pound .

Nice clean look to it

Next mod is still wip didn't quite work as planned, (yet)

The idea was have some tubing coming in and out to give a mechanical futuristic look to it, Since the holes we a little rough their temporally covered with spray can lids

FRONT PANEL
The front panel had sections missing , I don't have an exact stock shot but it looked like this before painting.

We cut some mesh from and old set of drawers we had.

More black meshy material used from a unused phone cover

Fitted nicely and very easy to cut with scissors

Tried stealthing thing the dvd drive but we bent and pulled a little much and one side snapped.

Side windows cut, Rounding the corners was too tricky .

We got a better mobo,cpu combo from a friend, has a few issues to say the least however.

Today we went back and stripped it all down after a few days break, few dings and knocks here and there, Aim to to get it fixed up a bit more this weekend. Maybe paint some more fans etc.

Due to his Narcolepsy he has good days and bad, so there is no Target date to finish

@paradigm wow again, dont know what to say ,

we started with a gigabyte board and a AMD 2200+ with 512mb ram
We were given an abit an52 board with a amd 4200+ , the board is very flaky to be honest , Ram is ddr2 2x 1gb stick of no name mixed stick one 553 and the other 800, so its down clocking to 533.

Graphics card seem ok atm, he's mad fore skyrim and such ,I suspect we can still run at low.

Hard drive we pulled from a sky HD box since its now redunant . We installed windows 7 earlier its not terrible it just lags and stutters a bit

this is connor we have just recived the package today and we are very pleased we have nearly finished all we have left to do is re spray our panels and re-build it

Glent here- We have connors cousins over so did get as much as we hoped but we did manage to sneak out to man shed and play with the drill

We got the top panel looking much better, the vinyl's we received today will be going on their too

As mentioned earlier the temp place holder to cover to holes for piping were replaced with these ( the name slips my mind just now)

Connor set to work with the drill and cleaned up the holes

he wants to go spray them purple , we aimed to paint the cases again tonight, his chest is a little off so it may be tomorrow most likely.

@panyan exactly, its great to be doing something we both really enjoy , it great to soo him so focused and upbeat after some the ups and down we have had .
@pgi947 The board is a Abit AW9D-MAX, graciously donated from paradigm, its a beautiful board I agree, as for GPU yes the 9600gt is all we have just now, we'll see how the games he want to play run . For the DVD I'll ask the boss in the morning , checking emails now also

@pgi947, Yeah checked the email just now, my gosh , we never in a million years expected this level of kindness ! it's just too much to take in, the offer is brilliant and I'm sure it give the build a good look now that it has window cut too
as for the work done today yeah its real unique look for sure, The PSU is a prize I won some months back, the brand is powercool but is rated to 850w, to be honest I don't know a lot of SLI and the amount it would draw?
I totally understand your point about tools, I remember my dad saying keep away and I went and played . learnt the hard way and bust my fingers open playing with stanley blade, he's very mature and I'm confident he'll always do things we me or an adult to supervise

@paradigm yeah very quick not tested just yet, the box was in perfect shape though and extremelly well packed, so all will be good im sure. The vinyls are perfect! me may be in touch thanks for offer

@pgi947 awesome will do, the 9600gt has a 6 pin connector,
the monitor has was given to us by a friend i don't know the specs, only thing he mentioned was that it can't do 1080p, which is fine I don't think the old gpu could do that anyway

little update today, sanding down and repainting some the knocks and few areas where the paint had dripped etc

The camera does not seem to pick up the purple to well, it looks more like this

Hopefully the final shots show just how nice of a colour it is
The paint is very quick drying so might get to rebuild it tonight pending his younger brothers behaviour!

@zooankski , agreed it's nice to see a different thought process and imagination come into play with a build instead the same old style.

Plan was to do a litte more today pending how con is feeling, poor little man was up late plugging the entry for the bitfenix pimp your rig comp. We was first place at midnight , when we we last checked and slipped into second over night

Still not the final shots down, but here is it is looking. Still a bit of sorting to do tomorrow.

Connor wants to paint the I/o shield also most likely purple

The cable braid we had was orange, now dyed purple

mini update, sorry for the delay, we had some trouble with side panel fitting, which meant breaking it back down again.

Picture doesn't show it to well but the bottom corner was not fitting at all

Connor spotted a small error and corrected it

80mm fan and mesh receive a coat of paint

Rebuild

The side panel + Fan + mesh looking good , The fan was clear and now looks like its floating
ideally some white trim around the cut would look nice, Connors likes it this way though and it's his call.

Connors also been tweaking the front panel , he wants to mesh all the 5 1/2 bays

Thats it for now still a few things on the to do list as mentioned earlier.

@pgi947 ,No rush mate just when you have time, as for the covers sounds perfect mate. We will play some mesh today/tomorrow and I'll report back the progress though.

Connors already planned his next build, it's for his chosen charity Narcolepsy Uk. I'll get a thread with all the details up later. Essentially where looking to do a sponsored build, raffle it off. It's in its early stages we have might have one company onboard and are in discussion elsewhere

Apologies for the delay, Things have been a little tough and busy at home, Unpleasant virus and other issues. Anyways back to the build mostly just a tidy up today.


We've misplaced one key piece to finish it
it was a smaller bezel/cover that was intended to hold the front mesh in place. It's really all we needed to finish for today. We'll find it am sure.
