Project : Quiet PC

Sorry to hijack (not really sorry at all)

But does fitting a (non-stock) fan to your graphics card, invalidate the warranty? Or is it only if the workmanship is shoddy or noticed on RMA?

It does void it, but in most instances, fitting the original cooler again is easy as pie.

Yep, but keep the old HSF (Heat Sink and Fan), don't tell the manufacturers and there shouldn't be a problem.

Might wanna have a chat with you later.
Can you be on MSN tonight?

I'll do you one better, I could prolly pop round this weekend and have a look first hand ;)

Heck, I may even have a fan controller lying around somewhere :D

Sounds a plan dude!
Ill get the beer :)
ps: is the fan controller black - must match case :D

Cheers krooton and melbourne720 - been looking into getting one (X1900XT's aren't pleasantly quiet) and just wanted to know where I'd stand if it went breasts up like my last one.

Why not just 7V mod the fans if you don't want to buy a fan controller? It's easy and completely free.

Having the ability to vary the speeds is great.

I turn em up when gaming, down when sleeping.

If I do have one, it would be silver and 5.25" I'm afraid.

I do have a Zalman fanmate though, will sort a single fan, provided it has a 3-pin power connector.

Will catch ya on the weekend then, will only take me 20mins to get to you :D

No need to spend loads, get the akasa junior 3.5" one from here, should be £12 delivered. That covers 3 fans, and the fanmate will sort one as well, so 3 case-fans and the cpu fan can be sorted.

I'll bring some AS yes, and isopropyl alcohol to clean your heatsink/s :)

Great stuff! :D

Making a quite PC is pretty simple and cheap really. All you need is LOTS of large 120mm FANs and some resisters (cheap £1 fans will do fine) but run them all at very low rpms (6v ish). This will mean you need to probably cut a few extra 120mm holes in the case to generate decent airflow through the case.

Have you seen the size of a V600? There's no space for any more fans! Personally I'd rather live with a bit of noise that start hacking at my beautiful Lian Li, leave that kind of thing for the old beige mods! :p

PK!

Just skimmed this thread another idea since im a silence freak too, is to get a big fluffy pillow and put the entire pc on top of it.

This kills the vibrations/and overall noise of the pc, it cut my noise by 10-20% easily.

Ive seen another forum member use a white cardy and it worked as well :)

Perhaps also HDD enclosures....

lol, good idea, but for some reason I just cant help but picture it with a little teddy too...

Personally I'd be worried about the stability, I am known for the odd clumsy moment...

PK!

yeap while it can be wobbly it will naturally flatten it and be more rigid.

Dont do it if u think its gonna fall down, but its a wicked way to cut noise/vibrations :)
