Hi everyone!

I'm looking to get back into SIM racing after a long 5 year absence. I'm starting from scratch as all previous hardware failed to accompany me over the journey!

I've come to accept that it probably isn't going to happen instantly, more likely to take until the end of 2014 to have my rig complete. Buy one can dream...

I'll be on a budget but can't really say what it is as I'll just be buying components whenever I have some spare cash. Im hoping to have change from £1k though when all said & done.

So I've been doing some research over the last couple of days and after originally thinking Intel is the No.1 choice (which it probably is?) I think I can probably get the bang that I need with an AMD processor, for a lot less buck!

Considering the only gaming I'll be doing is SIM racing (to include Assetto Corsa & I racing amongst others) I've come across the following CPU & GPU and was hoping if anyone could tell me if this is a good starting point and would handle the game requirements adequately....

AMD FX6300

ASUS AMD Radeon HD7850.

As I say, this is what I've come up with after a couple of days googling. I'm a total novice with computer components and what they all mean so I won't be offended if you pull my selection to pieces!

I look forward to any advice or further recommendations, both computer components and/or SIM racing!

Regards,
Simon.

welcome to the forum,
first of all you should read the rules: NO OUTSIDE LINKS TO ANY OCUK COMPETITOR

i would swap around that gpu and get:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-338-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1982

it got bf4 free andits cheaper, and performace wise is a bit faster/same
http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-270-vs-Radeon-HD-7850

or you could save a few pound anf get this withouth bf4:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-169-PC&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1982

but with a 1k budget i wouldnt touch a 6300(i got a 6300 and msi 7850 and they are great)

i will post in a second another option

edit:

Thanks for the response!

Yes, my bad for posting links outside OC. Lesson learnt.

Id be quite happy for the build to come in well under £1k if it ran the SIM racing titles well. If the fx6300 is up to the job then I'm happy, or even if it's overkill I'm happy to downgrade! Remember the project Is to include everything needed for SIM racing (monitor, wheels, pedals, keyboard, mouse) so I'll need some cash for these bits too.

I did look at the r9 270 during my research but for some reason didn't include in my results, don't know why. I'm not at all fussed about having bf4 so don't need that tbh. I notice OC has on offer the r9 270x which I presume is better still than the 270 (and hd7850?) and at £144 it's about the same price of the hd7850 I was originally looking at...

I'll have a look at the other bits you've posted to try and learn a bit. Remember, I don't need to go over the top, but appreciate if something is similar in price then it makes sense to upgrade.

Any other thoughts?

What level of advanced sim racing do you want?
Are we talking multi monitor screens?
Have you budgeted in for wheels/pedals/shifters and a stable stand?
Even though Assetto Corsa and even Project Cars are in early access they are pretty demanding games if you want to crank up the graphical settings to their maximum.

I'm quite happy with the single monitor setup.

As I said I haven't really got a fixed budget, the cheaper the cost the sooner I get to race! I think I'll just clamp the wheel to a desk so no need for a stand. I believe I can pick up a used Logitech dfgt for around £70. Haven't researched a monitor yet. My concern at the moment was making sure the processor and the graphics card is a good fit...

Do you think the 6300/270x are capable of running the likes of AC without compromise?

Do you think the 6300/270x are capable of running the likes of AC without compromise?

My concern is the CPU,

While it is good, its only good in a multi-threaded capacity. Its single core strength is very much lacking.

I don't know exactly how AC is coded but as its in development i assume it performs better on high power single threaded CPU's than multi-threaded ones. (someone please inform me if this is wrong).

If that is the case, the 6300 isn't a great choice, especially as its only going to get more texture and core hungry.

The suggestion of a 4670k would be my choice in this build.

Please excuse my ignorance when it comes to multi threads and single cores..

Ive read that the fx6300 is great for overclocking, might this ease some of your concerns about the CPU being able to handle AC?

since your post I've been googling 'AC & fx6300' and according to this site: http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/index.php?pid=1146&cpu=FX-6300
the processor does meet the required spec? I also found reports of frame rate drop with this CPU on certain scenarios in AC, but also with an i5 chip??

I originally was looking at an i5 4670k but after watching some YouTube video I was made aware of the AMD X4750k and at £100 cheaper and good reviews I thought my mind was set, until I read a some more and learnt for a little more buck I'd get quite a bit more bang with the fx6300!

I agree though, the more developed AC gets the higher the demand on the CPU...
