I've always been interested in making things and so when I saw the MountainMods H2g0 I wanted one but couldn't justify £305 I thought I would make one similir. Heres some photos.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The outisde it will be filled then sanded smooth then spray painted black with a 'The Cube' logo on the front. I still need to cut the optical drive face holes out though. I will also cut two holes out in the bottom half for two 120mm fans for watercooling.

The right hand side, I have moved away from the design of the mountain mods motherboard rack on the top and put it in the bottom self for better cable management otherwise the cables would not have been long enough. At the top left are the optical drive racks.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The left hand side, the top right is the hard drive rack (when finished it will hold upto four HDDs) and on the left is the PSU. I'me thinking of eluminated clear acrylic for the sides.

This is the bottom shelf with the removable motherboard tray soon to be held down with wing nuts so a screwdriver isn't needed which will not fiot in that shelf.

The front of the case will have a red on/off button along with the holes for up to three optical drives.

It's a real old ABIT board I'm using to get the dimensions. I won't be finished for a while though I'm refitting my shed!!!

Yeh man it's hopefully gonna be watercooled anyway how much heat escaapes from a metal case?

Metal - good conductor, transfers heat effectively. Wood - poor conductor, may start to insulate if there is air trapped. But as long as the air flow is good, you should get away with it ;)

Wood is unconventional for a computer case. By no stretch is it a bad choice for this though, I think you'll do well.

Id personally be inclined to go with aluminium, but working with wood is far nicer. I like the design so far, but recommend looking into needing to ground the motherboard. I think the standoffs attached to metal sheet is a part of the atx spec, but I'm not certain of that

Are you going to sand down the inside ply/use filler and paint - I'd recommend it if you're going to have windows. Looks nice and easy to build in. :)

I doubt case material makes much difference in terms of cooling - airflow and the roominess of the case will make much more of a difference.

Ive wanted to do something like this but i always thought that wood would just make air traps and create heated space.

Ill definitely be keeping an eye out for this threads progress :D

Why not try drilling parts of the wood to make a grille effect (thinking along the lines of bird's bones) - it could work, although it could just make it fall apart.

Nice case, I would have though that cooling might be an issue but it seems most on here aren't concerned.

need some fan holes? ok watercooling it going to cool the important components but you still need some ventilation.. especially with wood.. burning pc springs to mind :D

I agree that you need ventilation, but I think the design of that looks like it should do the job.

Just put a couple of 120mm fans in do get airflow circulating. If you plan it out enough you could just have an intake "grille" and a couple of sets of holes to get it out of.

My main concern would be the GPU and underside of the motherboard, as they could feasably give off enough heat to cause a problem. Just make sure neither of their PCBs touch the wood and direct the air under them and you'll be okay :-)

Cool idea - I might consider doing this with my next build. I can't see what your solution is for the mobo i/o slots or the pci i/o slots. Your mobo tray looks snug so you can only move in one direction - you'll need to pull it into the case to clear the walls... What will you do about the different positioned pci slots? Will you just cut out the slots you needs or cut out a frame and make a changeable panel. If/when I do it I might butcher a metal case to make the tray and the i/o slots. I can then use the traditional solution for opening up new slots and mounting the mobo.
