Have been looking around at projectors and saw this bizzare DIY kit you can buy on ebay that consists of a fresnel lens and pojects upto 150"..

Anyone know how this works or has the plans let me know as i already have the lens and wouldnt mind trying it out.. for sims etc..

serious answers please, i know the only true answer it to buy a projector or big monitor realy...

Actually these things are supposed to work - saw an article on Tom's Hardware about it. Looking for it now. There was a much better way of doing it buy getting a knackered TFT (broken backlight is ideal) and strapping it to a cheapo OHP - worked a treat and gives the resolution of the TFT for a fraction of the price!

ive seen both of these and nearly tried both before just buyin a PJ lol

if i had to choose though i'd go for the cheapo TFT and OHP idea, a lot less messing and i'd assume better pic quality

The only real issue with the "Huge 100 inch screen" ads you've seen on fleabay is the fact that they're charging you for instructions you can get on the net for free and parts you can get online cheaper - but if you can't be bothered to search around then it saves the hastle!

I too would opt for the OHP - nearly built one of them about 2 years - found all the kit nice and cheap at auction, but never got around to it. Done properly, with a nice enclosure, some good quiet cooling and some sound proofing you can build something that'll beat the picture off a £3000 projector for a little over £200. One of these days I'll get back to it :p

I really, really doubt this.

Oh ye of little faith, there are so many ways to do this. I like this method:

Various methods can be found Here - heck, there are hundreds of sites out there if you're prepared to look!

With a high quality panel (24" resolution would do nicely ;) ) you'd have a <8ms projector well above the normal 2000 ansi level, for as little as £200. With some creative cooling and boxing it can even look good - though I'm a fan of Ghetto I ave to say.

Imagination is often a fine substitute for cash if you're prepared to work for it ;)

What the OP was asking is not the same as OHP + LCD screen. The ones OP consists of a TV inside a box with a frensel lens. Terrible quality.

OHP+ LCD screen is supposed to be quite good...although personally for that size similar to a CRT projector, and a OHP isn't exactly quiet and ideal for HT.

With some 'bits' I had lying around mine was going to be silently watercooled and hidden away behind the bookshelf. The only real limit to these things is how much effort you're prepared to put in. I haven't seen the Frensel lens's's' working, but Tom's Hardware did one and were pretty impressed - given the cost I think their verdict was - worth it for a laugh :p

Thanks for the replies, some great idea's here me thinks.

The OHP idea gotta be worth a crack, like the man says its how much time and effort you want to put into this DIY stuff that makes the difference... unless of course you have $$$$$$$$$

Thanks cavemanoc for you input, next stop ebay for cheap OHP unless someone has one, and an old 15" tft.. :D

Well if you want small and compact he could always go for one of these little beauties :D

Seriously though - when sourcing the panel, try to get a decent resolution and response rate - 1024*768 at least gives you HD, but 1280*1024 would be awesome for gaming. (and sub 16ms is a must to avoid ghosting!)

Make sure you get some nice quiet fans to kill the noise and plenty of pics please - always fun to watch a project like this :)
