projector

Considering a projector in the future what are the main types, pros and cons of each?

I would like as quiet as possible. Ideally not audible from listening position.
Cons are blacks tend to be weak and you need some light control to get the best image. A wide open window with bright sunshine creates a washed out image. Another con is you have to replace the lamp depending on version anywhere as short as 2000 hours or as long as 20,000 hours in which case you won’t replace it. Most fall between at 5k to 10k hours.

I don’t really consider it a con but my projector takes 10 or 15 seconds to switch on which is longer then a TV and the image starts dull and doesn’t hit correct color and brightness for a good 30 or 60seconds. It also takes 15seconds to switch off.

Pros are for relatively cheaply compared to a TV you can get a large 90” or even 100”+ HDR, 4k picture that looks great at night or with blackout blinds shut in the day.

There are various types like DLP which a tiny % of the population see rainbow colours with. So try before you buy.

Consider skipping a projector screen as these days decent projector paints are as good as decent screens while being massively cheaper. Most of my rooms at work and in my own home just use paint now.

Depends on what resolution you want. 1080p projectors these days are pretty cheap compared to say 10 years ago. 4K is ££££ but when you see a cheap 4k projector check the specs first to see if it really is 4k & not one that is 1080p output that will downscale a 4k signal. Also you will need to know the throw distance of said projector (screen size when using from a certain distance) Mine for example (Epson 3200) is 92" diagonal from 10ft throw distance. Bulb replacement is also something to bear in mind when buying (bulbs last 2-3000 hours) The market is mainly DLP but LCD & others are available.

For bulb based projectors have they not moved to led? Use less power, cooler therefore quieter and last longer.

As for pro and con talking different tech is slow laser not projector as a whole, as I used cry and LCD projectors years ago.

Not yet but they are starting to move to LED. The LED ones tends to cost more but its only a matter of time before they get cheap and fully replace bulbs.
