Is putting down this amount and then just leaving the heatsink to spread it as I screw it in the best way?
 
almost there you should apply pk1 in the middle and let the pressure of the heatsink do the rest; to me though it looks like you have slightly too much. Should be no bigger than a grain of rice.
 
This isn't a pic of mine but from hardware heavens comparison of different application methods. Their tiny and small (small is pictured and tiny is smaller) were both the best performing.

I've yet to apply, I'm going to after this thread gets a few more replies.
 
Here are the pics of my heatsink and cpu. Wondering if you guys think it looks clean enough for an application of TIM? I can blow the dust off, ofc.

I just put ArtiClean on both of them a couple times. I think those imprints are slight dents from when the under side of the heatsink went loose for a couple weeks and probably put more pressure at the top side. Prolly not something I can remove (haven't tried yet though).
