Morning Guys,

Yesterday i got all my bits through from overclockers. in all my excitement i have put it all thogether and pressed the power button being all nervous. to my suprised it fiered up 1st time :) w0o0o i thought everything was going to well.

just fired up coretemp to check what the temps where like with the standard heat sink. to find all 6 cores sat at 78-82 degrees at idel.

proccessor is i7 980x.

i took the heatsink off to check the thermal paste and there was a even thin amount covering the full cpu. put it back on fired it up again and still the same temps.

im bit worried that maybe i dont have enough thermal paste or the heast sink is not working correctly?

anybody had this issue?

Cheers Simmy

thank you for the welcome.

yep its the stock cooler its massive so i thought that would be good enough to @ least keep me running around 40-50c

ive got 6 fans in the case as well so airflow shouldnt be a problem my q6600 ran at about 30 on idel and 60 maxed.

if by push/pin mounting u mean the way the it screws to the cpu? yeah that was a bit of a pain to get the screws to grip. but 100% they all screwed in tight and the cpu was locked solid and wasnt moving. i guess ill get some paste from ******s(haha at that word being filtered) on way home and try again. whats the best thing to clean the cpu with. @ work intel usually send Alcohol wipes with there new motherboards. but dont have any of them left

i understand that when overclocking the cpu i will need an updated heatsink. but it should be 80c with the standard one thats just silly.

and im probs gonna get a closed loop water cooler like the hyrdo 70

when applying paste to the i7? wahts best to do? when doing it before i have just put a thin even layer coverign the cpu and i best to just stick a pea size blob in middlle?

right well i found the problem it was me being super dumb!

i had an old version of core temp that just ran from a folder i was using this to pessure the temps and was getting 80c all time

i checked the bios and it said 30c i was like wtf

so downed speedfan core temp and real temp new 1's

and they all give decent temps.

now my next concern is that things are running very very cold!

to cold for a system cooled by air?

temps1.jpg

this is under 100% full load after about 10 mins max temp hit 52c and lowest temp is like 22c

this is on a standard heatsink

im just shocked at how low they are. need to do some research into overclocking as i havnt a clue really!

but i guess if i get decent cooling i could run it at around 4ghz.

just dont wanna fry a 800 quid cpu!

cheers will get that when i get home.

not worth trying a little oc on the standarded cooler?

if its only running 50c under 100% load.

no harm in getting it up a fewc

intel have made a decent heatsink to start with i think.

my old q660 quad ran at 45c ish at idel on a stock cooler lol

so for this to idel at 25ish is pretty good consider cpu has extra 2 cores!

i wont need anything crazy for and overclock. and im scared ill try it if i push it to hard cos i havnt a clue what am doing.

will read the guide u gave me cheers.

whats the best bench marking tool to use ive got that 3d mark 11 but. thats just dx 11 is there a standard one people use?
