*** Proper 390X review & discussion thread ***

Your looking at the wrong section. Look at orangey's post. They state double the tessellation performance. It's actually under the witcher 3 tab. Under "apples to apples". Like I said.

We have to remember with catalyst drivers your able to control the amount of tessellation that being applied in games. Moving the slider from 64x to 16x apprantly results in discernable drop in visual quality but gives a dramatic boost in performance.

If AMD have simply upped core speeds surely the 290x 8gb should be seeing the same boosts with the newer drivers...? Or have they been naughty and gimped the 290x to make the 390x look better?

Depends if you trust hardocp then doesn't it? But no one is saying their other fps tests are wrong, so not sure why they would do it for half of a game test that didn't affect the end results.

it's still not an apples for apples test like it is when they did the clock for clock test. Their turning up all the settings apples for apples test is unfair as it doesn't have equal clocks on the 290x and 390x, they should have tested a 290x 8gb and clock for clock.

Also in other games the apples to apples (but not clocks tests) the variance in fps in my opinion is just demonstrative of just clock speed differences. But i don't trust hardocp either.

been with AMD years now. . 4950 - 6950 - 2x280X's. The last few yrs the driver support has been lacking and i wont even start on crossfire. Im not impressed with yet another rebrand because thats what it is either way you look at it. The fury cards with 4gb of mem arent sparkling either. Im edging towards a 980ti replacement with sli in mind.

I thought quality only suffered going below 8x? As in no difference above 8x.

Apparently they are. They're saying you can hack the pre-release ones to work on 290X.

I'm running a Titan X atm or I would check myself.

Because it's a re-brand, plain and simple, with a £100 premium (or more!) over the 290X.

Feel free to RTM me if you want. I'm not saying anything that the review sites aren't making glaringly obvious.

It's a re-brand. The clock-for-clock improvements are tiny, being due to the maturity of the 28nm process, and even with the clock bumps amount to 10% more speed only.

10% for £100 more. Sure, ban me for not being super excited about that!

Anyway, it seems like this is a joke thread. Far from being "serious discussion" of the card, all you want to do is heap praise on it and big up AMD for this "achievement". Guess you should call the thread "Glorious people's champion AMD release amazing new 390X for benefit of whole world!" Would be more obvious what kind of "discussion" you wanted here.

This. Wish people would stop comparing it to the 980 and compare it to the 290X - Then everyone would run for the bushes!:D

The thing is 290x with the new 15.20 drivers are not only beating 980, they are getting close to 980ti and titans in games.

The new drivers seem to give 10 to 20% performance boost across the board.

Witcher especially, which i havent tested yet, have had reports of people going from 40 fps to 50fps with their 290x. Thats a massive increase.

How to Upgrade/flash your 290x to 390x :D

In the Moor report they stated AMD had redone the microcontrollers in the Hawaii silicon itself. Aren't the tesselator, scaler etc integrated within the die?

So perhaps tess has been improved in this way?

Yeah save your money kids, buy the 290x for £220.

The smart move imo would be to get the 390 non X. If the performance gap between the 390 and 390x is anything like the 290/290x its the way to go. Near enough all the performance and enhancements of a full fax 390x and twice the vram of a 290 for another 55 quid.

Agreed. Or buy a cheap 290/290x for silly money and put the new drivers on if you dont need 8Gb.

Even new we have seen new 290s listed at £179. I got my 290x for £130 each.

From reading some reddit comments it seems they might simply be binning 290X cores that have tesselator logic blocks that can be OC'd, which are then clocked accordingly with the new Grenada BIOS. That might be the true meaning of Grenada. This might also allow them to offer higher VSR options. Rather clever as it allows them to avoid a respin or even a stepping change and thus the costs associated.

Thoughts?
