*** Proper 390X review & discussion thread ***

I'm even more confused now, so the 390X is actually pretty good and worth its price? Speaking about that, if the new drivers are good, and the 290X is actually better than the 970, have we been all fooled? I thought the 970 is better than the 290X.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about. This launch for me falls in the same ballpark as AMD bulldozer. Complete flop on a major scale. AMD have basically re-launched the same GPU as two years ago, with hardly any improvements and at almost the same price bracket.

Is there any significant improvement in any area? Fury will also be a flop with 4GB VRAM limitation. A top of the line card for enthusiasts, wanting to game at 4k resolution in modern games and only 4GB of VRAM will be available?

Any game, build up from the ground for the new gen of consoles, will eat that 4GB at that resolution, or at the very least run close to it. And we are right around that time, when games such as this are becoming more and more common.

I honestly can't see AMD surviving at this rate in the upcoming years. Intel are completely walking all over them (Zen won't change that) and Nvidia has now started to do the same. Hopefully a major company can buy AMD out and start rebuilding this lost company.

The thing is 290x with the new 15.20 drivers are not only beating 980, they are getting close to 980ti and titans in games.

The new drivers seem to give 10 to 20% performance boost across the board.

Witcher especially, which i havent tested yet, have had reports of people going from 40 fps to 50fps with their 290x. Thats a massive increase.

is the performance jump is bigger on gameworks titles, if yes then game with most tesselation will see the highest gain.
then wtf, can't help myself but to think that Nvidia was really hindering Radeons through tesselation as AMD said, thankfully AMD found a workaround apparently, but what if they didnt, is it ok for Nvidia to ruin the games for players to keep an edge over a competitor ? and what after tesselation, should we look forward to another way Nvidia will hinder perf for AMD user on other games through gameworks?
one thing is sure this need a real investigation, to come to the bottom of it.

The dog in Fallout 4 will obviously be overly Hairworks'd to make NV look good.

Basically look out for any animals with fur in upcoming games LOL. :D

As for potential tess improvements we would like to see someone run TessMark or similar on both 290X and 390X with same clocks/drivers.

I hope not, as that hair works screws Nvidia FPS up too!

I have a 7950 that Im looking to upgrade.

Will I see a significant jump buying a 390x or should I wait for a 'fury'. I have a BenQ XL2420T - I may move to a high reslution going forward.

Indeed, hairworks isn't a reason to buy nvidia - as it's something I turn off due to the massive FPS hit over the visual gain.

I'll take another scale resolution over hair-works for a similar performance impact thanks.

In total honesty, I've had numerous driver problems with Nvidia recently (display driver fails) & if ATI can fill me with confidence regarding x-fire profiles that will be all I need to switch back to ATI.

While the 390x isn't really something I'd be in the market for now (Fury is the level I'm aiming at) it's not a bad card - tho a little high on the price in my view (a small price reduction would be nice if they want to really take back a decent market share)

Really impressed with the MSI Gaming 390X, while most brands have basically just added 4GB to theirs and changed the name MSI have designed a completely new card, and from reviews it's paid off. That TF5 cooler is a beast, will be interesting to see how it fares on the 980ti/Fury (both of which generate less heat).
