The time has come to upgrade my computer, and as usual, give my parents the old rig for nuffink. I'm keeping the case of course!

Now I use my main tower as a workstation (AutoCAD, Sketchup, and 3D Max occasionally) and so heavily depend on it, for this reason I'm bulking up a bit more than usual. I used to play games, but I don't really any more - I'm sick of looking at a screen for work, so I'm not doing it when I'm not working!:

Initially proposed (very approximate):

CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2630 or similar
CPU Cooling: I'll probably try to re-use the Corsair 80 and Link Commander, it won't be compatible of course, knowing my luck!
Motherboard: GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI (although I'm looking for a wifi'less mobo really)
RAM: 4 x 2GB/3GB/4GB (not sure yet, probably Crucial though, as I do trust 'em).
Graphics: NVidia K4000/K5000 Quadro (so long as I have 3 outputs)
Monitors: 2 x Dell UltraSharp U2412M (or equiv.), re-using my existing Samsung SyncMaster 2494HM (which I'm very happy with).
PSU: Something semi-fanless like http://www.quietpc.com/zm1250-platinum (this is overkill, I should probably calc the max loading and re-think this)

The 3 outputs are for full screen AutoCAD/SketchUp, one for email/web and the other for looking at photos/media as I draw up...or to watch the tv :)

This is a bit dreamland at the moment, but I must invest in my gear... and it's TAX deductible of course ;)

If anyone has a comment, I'd welcome it very much. :)

Right, I have to confess, I've only built desktop machines so far, so true workstations are a little new to me.

I've narrowed down the CPU though:

2 x Intel Xeon E5-2620, around 2.0GHz

Then onto the motherboard, once I've got the answers to a few questions:

SuperMicro X9DR3-F (Dual CPU Support)
I guess the Asus Z9PE-D8 WS might be just as good, although I think the Supermicro is a little cheaper, but both accept the chosen CPU's.

Graphics card:

PNY Nvidia Quadro 4000 Graphics Card - 2GB - GDDR5 SDRAM

RAM:

So far 16GB, but that may be effected by the budget.

After that, the rest should be a lot easier, cooling, SSD's and all that.
