Prospective build MOBO confusion?

Hi this is my first ever post here on the over clockers forum please dont be too harsh if i'm stepping out of line because I am new here.

Basically the build is an I5 4690k with a z97 motherboard, 16gb ram, 980ti, Noctua slim cup cooler, 850w titanium rated PSU and an SSD and HD

I was wondering if any of you technically inclined people could tell of any bottlenecks I might run into when it comes to mainly gaming performance?

My main concern is the motherboard, which is an entry level Z97 from gigabyte which is the cheapest I could find. I'm not expecting to run into any problems as far as I'm aware  but I'd like to know whether there would be any compatibility issues when using an entry level Z97 motherboard with a GTX 980ti or if there is anything to gain from spending a bit more to get a different Z97 Like an MSI gaming edition or maybe something other than a Z97

The rig would be used mainly for playing demanding games like the latest AAA titles (Witcher 3, Fallout 4, GTA V, Assasins Creed Syndicate, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 and whatever else comes out soon that i like the look of :D ) All at the highest settings 1080p resolution maybe some 4k down the line. I will probably do a bit of messing around in Photoshop, after effects and maybe some kind of music production software for a bit of fun.

Any advice/tips or hardware alterations you would suggest, especially regarding the motherboard, would be greatly appreciated.

Ideally my budget would lie somewhere close to the £1000 mark but if it goes over so be it.

Sorry If it is a bit long and rambly but I've been meaning to put together a good gaming build for a while now and there are just some things I'm still unsure of so again, any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Forgot to say, the £1000 target budget would be without a monitor, Although realistically even without a monitor the current setup would cost closer to £1200. So any advice for saving money without compromising performance would also be fantastic!

And I also forgot to mention that I would prefer it to run silent if not very quiet hence the Noctua cooler

And yes, maybe that PSU is a bit overkill but thats why i'm posting this here, to get some advice :/

Well, welcome to the forums anyway :)

Now, as far as your dilemma is concerned - your choices should in part be governed by the resolution you want to game at. At 1080p, the 980ti is overkill really although you'd certainly get ultra settings and rock solid framerates.

For 4k gaming one 980ti won't be sufficient, but then I'm not sure 4k gaming is where you should be aiming. A good 1440p monitor will look utterly fantastic - I have a 27in Rog Swift on one of my builds and the difference between that and my old P2450 is staggering.

As for your motherboard question a cheap Z97 from Gigabyte will be fine and won't be a 'bottleneck' - you'll just lose some features like SLI, number of USB ports and fancy MOSFET cooling. If you want us to spec you a PC from OCUK just give us a budget and what your expectations are and we'll get you started with some ideas.

Thanks man! I've just realised that the only reason your "competitor" is able to sell the products cheaper is because they're shipping from mainland america and then adding the import tax and shipping prices on top of the list price making them WAY more expensive than Overclockers.

As for the resolution solution, whilst 1440p sounds god-like, I am only just getting back into pc gaming after having had the same old battered laptop for well over 5 years now and I would be more than happy enough to play games smoothly at 1080p ultra, so its time to build a solid desktop.

Basically I would like a solid, stable and quiet system that's also future proof (I.E. upgradeable)

It should run the more demanding games at 1080p ultra without straining too hard or turning my room into a sauna.

Ideally I would like to spend around the £1000 mark, including the monitor.

So I'm thinking that with the current Black Friday sales going on that wouldn't be too much to ask, ExRayTed?

Also does a bog standard GTX 970 have enough grunt for what I'm looking for/would it be too noisy with the blower so go for the fan/heat pipe combo insted??
