I have just built a new rig, but wish to get the data off the hdd from my old rig which died, so have rescued the disc and borrowed an Easy IDE - usb2 converter i was hoping to get some documents from my old account. But access is denied (i guess that is due to me setting it up that way when i set up XP on my old pc)

is there anyway to get passed the security on the folder/documents?

That's just caused by the SID's for your old user accounts not validating on your new PC.

Usually you can get around it by adding, say, the "Administrators" group or just even your own user account onto the folder from it's Properties->Security tab.

i am looking in the right place now, had to get rid of simpler security and then add my account in the security tab and propegate down

(that was hard work thinking back to my 2003/Xp courses!)

thanks for the pointer

No worries. Microsoft really should have added some sort of user experience for this on Vista, unfortunately we'll all have to put up with it for another couple years :/
