I'm trying to sort out a PC for a friend. They downloaded a "virus checker" (read: virus infested software) about a month ago, and I thought I'd got rid of it. I did a spybot check the other day and their antivirus told me that a file, unist.exe I think it was, in C:\Windows, was a trojan, and couldn't be deleted. So I booted into safe mode, and deleted the file. Since then, when windows loads it comes up with an "Can't open file type: .protected" and then the "What sort of software would you like to open this with/choose from a list etc etc".

Any ideas how I can stop this?

I tried googling, but couldn't for the life of me work out how to get google to search the "." in .protected :rolleyes:

There must be a program in the startup list or services list that wants to run, check with MSCONFIG and SERVICES.MSC (start, run, type) if there is something suspicious.
 
Thanks for the replies. Went into msconfig>startup and found the two ".protected" entries, and disabled them. However, now, the system isn't booting in "normal" mode but selective startup. Is this a problem?

No It Just Means That Its Not starting All Entries In The Services And Startup Tab when Windows Starts
