Protecting a laptop from theft

Kensington lock/Bitlocker/TrueCrypt.

TrueCrypt for securing data, no recovery on theft unless the laptop is returned.

Offsite cloud backup device, with TrueCrypt also.

Intel used to supply a piece of software called Anti Theft Technology for all laptops and nucs. It worked well but then it just disappeared.

I always buy laptops that I can enable hardware full drive encryption on (or swap the SSD for one that supports it). No loss of performance and can be enabled in seconds with the right SSDs.

For backup I use a combination of cloud (encrypted before send) and full drive backups/incrementals via Macrium Reflect when at home, in my case to my home server.

Beyond that I just make sure my insurance covers the equipment.

To protect laptop from theft, avoid buying a laptop with flash lights, having it look brand new\branded, these things are targeted by thieves, the better\newer the laptop, the higher chance of theft
