Protecting PHP code

I've seen a couple of programs on here:

that can encrypt PHP code, but they seem to require some sort of server side install. Is there a way of protecting code for distribution without having to change the server it will be hosted on?

In short, no. Not that I've seen, anyway

Also, the Zend setup is found on almost all hosting installs, but I'm not sure about SourceGuardian.

A strong contract/license is your best method of protection unfortunately.

Has anyone used Source Gardian before? It sounds like a better option for me. I just wondered if you needed to install software on the target server or just run your script through another script (if that makes sense)?
