Hey guys,

To begin with, I hope this is the right section for this.

I'm looking for some info on making my own protein porridge, and whether it is worth it to increase my daily protein intake. I eat a mainly vegetarian diet, so I'm a bit worried that my protein intake can be a bit low (I do however eat eggs and fish).

I do an hour on the turbo trainer before work, and then have a half hour walk to work, so I get breakfast when I arrive.

I've started to eat porridge for my breakfast, and I'm also trying to shift the last 7 kilos I want to lose to hit around 59 kg.

Is putting some unflavored protein powder into porridge a good idea to boost my protein intake, and ensure it fills me up for longer?

Any other tips to increase protein intake?

Any help is appreciated :)

I get a fair amount of protein from tuna - not something to go mad on but ~5x 40-50g portions a week should be safe of any heavy metal concerns.

Not sure how healthy it really is but I've been eating my own oatcake and tuna concoction lately which on paper should be fairly healthy and atleast for my tastes is quite satisfying.

Damn, they look good! Thanks for that.

No added sweeteners too! I really try and avoid that crap now. I've lost about 18 kilos since April last year (slacked off a bit between September and December), and most of it is down to better eating, and no sugar/sweetener junk.

What's your current protein intake? What's your current weight? And what is your height? I'm guessing quite short if your target is 59kg.

I couldn't say for certain what my current intake is. It's probably more than I think it is, but perhaps around 60g on a good day (I supplement it with Eat Natural Protein bars that I want to reduce my intake of (10g protein per bar)) and probably less on a bad day.

I'm currently 66.5kg and I'm 5 foot 4.

On the subject of the porridge again, would it be fairly easy to just add protein powder to come normal porridge oats without buying anything fancy?

I add normal protein powder to my porridge all the time. My best advice is mix up the protein powder with a little bit of water, and then only add it when your done cooking the porridge.

If you add the powder straight to the porridge it can be very stodgy, and if you add it before cooking it's even worse!

I use strawberry whey, and when I add it, I don't need any other sweeteners for it to taste lovely.

I always cook mine on the cooker, either milk or water and oats, depends on what allowance I have, then mix the porridge until it's just a bit too runny but oats are cooked out, take off the heat and stir in your whey. It'll thicken up with the whey, so that's why leaving it slightly runny works best on the cooker top.

Sadly I'll be making my porridge at work so I'll only have a microwave. I don't like rushing off the bike and eating and then walking to work.

How much whey do you add to your oats? And what quantity of oats?

What tastes good and fits your macros? What Syla5 likes might be quite different to your tastes...

Ooh. Err. :D

1 scoop of whey so around 30g protein. For you do your porridge in the microwave and then definitely add the whey after, mixing with a little bit of water so you don't over thicken.

Shhhh Mrthingx!

Yes bulk powder from those guys is fine. Unflavoured is cheapest but nothing wrong with flavours. I flavour my whey + oats (proats) as the taste of unflavoured whey isn't masked enough, although you still get a creaminess to the taste that you don't get with regular oats. As others have said - microwave and deliberately use a bit more water than normal so it's runny, let it cool slightly, then mix in the whey (not all at once, stir it in a bit at a home) which will thicken it up considerably.
