Hi,

Someone who is interested in my car has asked for the V5 reference number to do a DVLA history check

I've never been asked for this before, is it normal to provide the number to someone I don't know, if its not a legit request what could they possibly use it for?

Thanks

It is a legit request.

What are they wanting it for? HPI or a MOT check? First thing i ask for is car reg and a MOT reference number so i can check the MOT history.

V5 number can be used for this also. But V5 number is usually used for a HPI check.

Forget to say he wants it for the MOT check which checks the last 6 as I've just tried it

Shall I just send it him and stop being paranoid?

Yes.

Put it this way, I wouldn't bother even viewing a car from a seller unwilling to provide it.

I would be wary on a high value motor, it is possible to claim a new log book with the right details then have the police knocking on your door for having a stolen motor on your drive ;) don't just give out the details over the phone and keep vin and engine numbers to yourself.
