Provisional World Cup Squad

Aye its a laugh really isnt it, he justifys all his messing about in friendlys as trying players out then the crunch time comes around and he throws all what he's "learnt" out the window and just picks whoever he fancys on the day!!

Owen could do with playing in all Englands warm up games at least (maybe even have a run out on Thursday in Alans testimonial) just to get a bit of game time under his belt else he's gonna be playing himself into form during the actual tournament.

Can't believe Wes Brown has been left out of the squad not even a place in the back up

Ledley King is another who I thought would have won a place. It seems Sven is taking a chance with several of the dubious player's i.e Campbell, Cole, Rooney, Bridge plus, several duck eggs i.e Beckham, Hargreaves and Crouch :o

Let's not go into the goalkeeping department, that speak's for itself.

The Walcott inclusion is extremely clever - given the lack of other viable options (i think only defoe could be the other choice) - and perhaps makes up for the lack of SWP in the squad.

Even though Walcott hasn't yet proven himself at the level he'll be expected to play at, he has so much pace that defenders are going to be terrified of marking him. Remember when Crouch came on against Argentina and immediately they put two men marking him? Walcott could do much the same thing - creating space for gerrard and lampard to burst through from midfield.

It is a slightly worrying sign though that of the 4 strikers only 2 are fit and of those 2, 1 is completely unproven and the other would be playing division 3 were it not for his height. If all 4 are fit though i doubt any other team in the world cup would have the striking options that we do.

I would have had Brown instead of Campbell but thats the only change i would
make at the back

Ledley King was on crutches still 3-4 days ago so i wouldnt take him tbh

It doesn't really matter who is in the squad tbh.

I think these people overreacting because Walcott is in the squad are stupid, who knows how he is going to play? He might be a revelation, we just don't know.

The fact is that Rooney ISN'T going to play (face it) and even if Owen does, he hasnt played a proper game in months and therefore will be way WAY off the pace. Owen's game is all about sharpness, if he isn't sharp IMO he is pretty useless because he doesn't have a lot to his game.

With Rooney and Owen both fully fit, our WC chances were only ever decent. Without them, there isn't a chance.

Stop crying.

Im chuffed with the squad as long as owen is fit, if he;s not defoe will go. thing defoe and bent could go ahead of campbell and hargreaves, then it would balance up better.

Come to think of it, i can understand why Sven's taken Hargreaves; he can play CM, RM, RB and even LB. With the amount of players with injury doubts over them i suppose it makes sence.

Just a note to all those wri(gh)ting off SWP - I seem to remember that pretty much the same was being said about Joe Cole 18 months ago - he must leave, ruined by JM blah blah blah - still feel the same way?

Walcott puzzles me - not one senior appearance but deemed to be ahead in the pecking order to Bent, Defoe, Ashton, King and many others.....if I was them I'd be wanting to know why a player with a small number of appearances for Southampton is considered worthy of taking a spot in the most important global footballing competition that others have been working towards for 4 years....

Phil Neville does a better job in every one of those positions

annoyed at SWP not being there but as a city fan i was always going to be.

He hasnt much pitch time but there again looking at some of the players being taken with even less pitch time i really cant understand the decision, think Rooney should have been left at home, and Owen will not be match fit either.

Bent and Defoe are both going to be playing better at the moment than either of the two above, Sven needs to start picking players that are playing well rather than his love's

if we are going to take a squad riddled with borderline injured players where's ledley as he is well worth a space if fit. I don't know what Sven has planned but it wouldnt surprise me if he has a bet running on Sweden or Paraguay in the group stages with the squad list he's put together there.

Well I dont know what to say really other than that its quite a shock, when I read the rumours yesterday about walcott I thought thats all they were...rumours, but apparently not - my only worry is that if Owen and Rooney do play and they end up injured we will be left with Crotch and Walcott - im not suprised with the inclusion of Hargreaves however tripe he is Mr E loves him.

I've only just seen the list and what a massive surprise it was. I'm surprised that SWP isn't in and even more surprised about Walcott getting in there. I’m glad to see that Lennon is in there as well as Carrick. Potentially England have a very quick and attacking squad, but it also has some young and inexperienced players.

Looking at the players chosen it looks like a quick counter attack from England could be devastating. I’m looking forward to the warm up games now, just to see how Sven plays it and the players he tries out.

Walcott must be a little lacking in match practice having not kicked a ball in a meaningful match since January leaves us with only one fully fit striker and he's hardly been prolific. France did win the world cup without a real striker but they did have Zidane so were done for!
