I have built myself a Proxmox Server / NAS to make use of some 3.5" SATA hard drives that I have lying about.

What I'm not sure about it whether to get a RAID card go plug these drives into and create 2 x RAID 5 arrays to store VMs etc on or if I should just use HBA Card and can multiple drives added to make a Volume within Proxmox

Any suggestions would be helpful and also is Proxmox the best choice ??

Unless these raid 5 are for large data storage, don’t bother, bang an ssd in if it’s for learning as it’ll run waaaay smoother.

Hardware RAID would be more performant than software RAID but is the data of any value? If you lost it all would you care?

If you're going to use ZFS in Proxmox then you can't use Hardware RAID, use the HBA and let Proxmox RAID the disks within ZFS. All depends on what you're really trying to achieve though really.
