Proxy/NAT issues

Hi there, I have the internet on one computer and I want to share it over the lan to the other... The server is windows xp and the client is windows 2000. I did have this all working with a different server a while ago, but cant seem to get a solid solution any more. Wingate used to work well, but on this setup it seems to add about 6 seconds of lag to every action, which is unacceptable. After scouring around for other programs, I finally came to ComTun which seemed to work amazingly fast and had a small footprint, without a crazy confusing firewall to track lazy employees...

So anyway, it stopped working - that is to say that IRC works, and can connect to the internet fine, however other applications can't seem to connect. Comtun proxy is using NAT, so I'd assume that if one thing can connect anything can connect? I did have it working without setting up HTTP daemons and stuff, so something must've gone wrong?

I've had it on my internet connection before where IRC works where everything else does, so I assume the same thing has happened to me that happened to my ISP? Is this a common/obvious issue? I can't figure it out. I've played with as many of the proxy settings as I can think of, and still no joy.

Any help would be greatly apprectiated. Thanks for reading.
