Hi,

Firstly, yes I am angry. :p

It appears my [Insert Doctor Evil voice here] "lazer" in me ps3 drive has died.

Is there somesort of miracle home fix I can perform or is it now a really expensive paperweight?

Is it worth contacting sony? I think it went out of warranty around march 2009. Think I bought it feb 2008.

Anyone got a number to a human from sony that could help? Or they gonna say sod off?

Gah I cant afford another one, if I cant get it replaced i'll sell me games, joypad down the shop and hopefully have enough left for a non-sony brand blu-ray player :)

Thanks guys! Streeteh where did u find that number? I have looked over all far corners of the interwebs.

google doesn't paint a very good picture of sony customer services. I guess it's worth a try phoning them. If not I need to look into a mce remote and a blu-ray player standalone. non-sony of course!!

oh just thought! My ps3 works apart from the disk, sell all the games I dont play, buy a blur-ray player with the proceeds, win win!! I can still watch my erm stuffs on ps3 and watch blu-ray and dvd on me new player!!!

Glad I didn't throw me ps3 out the window during my rage!!

Apparently it's rather easy to replace the blu-ray diode, they cost approximately £50 on a popular auction site but you need to make sure you buy the right one as each PS3 sku uses a different one. Obviously beg Sony for a free repair first.

hhmmm ok, may put this idea to our local nice electrical appliance repair man! I could just sell me games and put £50 towards a new blu-ray player instead of paying for a repair, assuming sony tell me to get lost.

Only one sensible alternative really. Get a 360 :p

how does this help fanboy gobbler his games will be ps3 and there won't be blueray support so imo that would be a move not to even consider. iwould buy 2nd user ps3 or get it fixed.
there is a company that will fix console for £60+p&p so i'd look around if sony refuse or charge the earth.

I think what i'll do is use my broken ps3 to stream media into my bedroom from my server, sell my games and put that money to that nice panasonic blu-ray player.

I hardly play games on consoles to warrant any form of console tbh. I forgot that I have a wii in the cupboard I could sell that in town too!! new blu-ray player will cost me nothing!!

Thats if sony say no to a repair!! :(

Its just a very early batch of lazers "apparently" touch wood, that were faulty, replacing this would solve your problem.
Its not expensive, or difficult to do, mine went about 4 months ago, I just couldn't be bothered and bought a new one instead.

im finding prices of around £75 for a new laser with deck from the UK. sounds about right?

EDIT: just found consoleparts4u is that where u all mean? its £62 there.

Yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssss, just phoned sony and they are going to repair it for free!!!!!!!

I found my receipt, I purchased the console on 10/02/2008, they said that it was fine aslong as it was bought in 2008!!!

I think being polite and joking with them paid off!!!!

woohhhoooooo now to fax over my reciept!!
