From a quick search I don't seem to be able to find a definitive answer.

Can you use a DualShock 4 controller on the Vita?

My gaming habits have changed a lot this year and the idea of remote play from the PS4 with full Dualshock controls is very appealing.

Technically you can, but it's horribly cumbersome and involves setting your vita up as a sub account (which I think resets your vita to factory default). All a bit frustrating as it must be easy enough for Sony to do but they've never bothered fixing it.

Yeah I had been reading about setting up sub accounts etc.

So it looks like I can buy a Sony Tablet or Phone and get this functionality but not on there own dedicated mobile gaming console.

I already have a phone and tablet!

So I bit the bullet and got a Vita anyway as it will enable me to game on the move which is handy.

Fallout 4 on the Vita what I hoped for when I initially asked about dualshock 4 compatibility and it turns out that a couple PS4 games have been given specific Vita controls for remote play including FO4. It Seems to work very well from the few hours I have put in.

Destiny also have custom controls.
