So i'm still thinking about getting a PS3, one of the major selling points is the Backward Compatibility of PS1\2 Games.

I've read that the JAP\USA PS3's use Hardware to upscale PS1\2 Games and that PAL PS3's use Software.

Is this true?, and what are the differences? I mean is there really that much difference between HW\SW upscalling?

How do people who have PAL PS3's find PS1\PS2 games play on their PS3's?

Thanks :)

I've played MGS3, GoW 1 and 2 on my PS3 recently, all of them look superb.

GoW 2 in particular actually looks too good in places to be a PS2 game.

It must just be me then

But I'm using a DVI to HDMI connection at 1080i and 720p (tried both) and GOWI and GOWII both look terrible on the PS3

With upscaling on it looks even worse, jaggies everywhere, everything looks blurred too, it looks naff I must be doing something wrong

LCD over component.

I should point out that I haven't actually played the games on a PS2 and SDTV. I played MGS3 on a PS2 with a normal connection (it didn't work on the PS3 until the latest firmware update) and it looks a lot better playing it on the PS3.

It's best to bear in mind that these are PS2 games, so by the very fact that they are made for an inferior platform they will not look as good as the latest games.

Agreed, one of the rooms quite far into the game looks superb with the reflections on the floor and the background scenary.

My *cough* kids N64 and Gamecube both look better on the Sammy LCD than an SD interlaced CRT, Im not sure if I would spend £400 on a PS3 just for upscaling retro games  It might be better just to find the right LCD TV to hook the PS1/2 and everything else up to, unless of course the PS3 has a large price drop ;)

Its not the only reason i'm getting one, theres a lot of reasons, but it is a nice feature, I can get rid of my PS2 then too :D

I have a 26" samsung LCD, with a ps3 connected via HDMI. I recently purchased afew ps2 games, currently playing through resident evil 4 and it looks 'good'. Most the games imo look decent enough, pro evo 6 looked abit poor but then again thats because I have pro evo 6 for the 360 so I'm use to that now. I've tried about 5 games so far and they all work fine. :)

haven't found a ps2 game that hasnt worked since the latest update :D

and i should think all ps1 games will work since theyre all playable on pc emulators etc anyway

think some of the ps2 games now work online on the ps3 too although havent tried it ???

SOCOM 2 worked online for me before the last update so I assume others do too, not got round to trying any yet.

Has anyone got Final Fantasy 8 to work? Does sits at a black screen for me :(

GT 3 & 4 Look good with firmware 1.80 on a Samsung 32" lcd (in my eyes as good as they have ever looked,

This is how I see it, if you think that any given signal on a significantly bigger screen will make the signal look comparatively worse. However to my eyes playing those games on a 32" lcd makes it look as good as it used to on a much smaller crt. Yes there are a few glitches (I have permanently flickering sky in GT4 in a small area in the top left corner)

It worked for me, I had the platinum version with the black discs, no problems with it at all.

I honestly dont think I could recommend playing PS1 games via a PS3 on a LCD, when I say the graphics are poor thats probably an understatement, Squalls face was completely covered with jaggies and as the image is stretched making the jaggies look bigger, he was pretty much unrecognisable.

I lasted 5 minutes and turned it off, the memory of FF7/FF8/FF9 will have to wait until they get them playable on the PSP's small screen, those games just were never meant to be played at HD.

Obviously PS1 games will look bad on a PS3 but it would also look bad played on a PS1

I haven't played PS1 games on my PS3 but i regularly play Final Fantasy XII and Burnout Dominator on my PS3 and tbh they look quite good.

I am also lucky that all my PS2 games work without issues on the PS3

I thought that the jap/usa PS3's have an Emotion chip built in and as such have hardware PS1/PS2 compatibility when the Euro PS3 has to do with software emulation, but this is not related to the scaling but more to do with compatibility.
