Nope. There is an option on the PS3 remote settings where you can turn the PS3 on via your PSP.

I was never bothered about the psp remote stuff with the ps3, but this sounds amazing, is performance acceptable? no awful delay in button presses or anything?

its more of a gimmicky feature than being useful, i would prefer it if they started making decent ps3 games, rather than improving the playing conditions for ps1 games, if i was in my home i would rather play the ps1 games on my 32 inch HDTV screen using my ps3, than have it poorly streamed to my psp with low quality graphics, may be useful if your at uni, with wireless hotspots and have your ps3 at home, but then again i'd rather hang around with my mates than sit on my own playing a 10 year old game, the only real advantage of this is that you can take your psp anywhere with you within your home to play it, but then wouldnt i rather play a new game on my psp than a 10 year old one ive already played to death, but i dont really see any point, its nice to see them adding features though, hopefully home and their integrated services will improve within the next 6 months, they have had years to work on this, xbox live has been around for over 6 years, they messed up their online service on the ps2, you would have thought they would have came up with something decent by now, i would rather pay £35 a year for xbox live than be given £35 to use sony's online service, theres that much in it

being able to stream movies to the psp is a far better feature than being able to stream ps1 games

I've played some of the PS1 games on my big screen, they do not look good. Being able to play them on my PSP is perfect for me.

Is it possible to give the screen a 'zoom' effect, to fill the screen. I played FFVII earlier and whilst it was great, it was quite difficult at times to see the little doorways to walk through.

what is the quality like, surely because its being streamed it isnt clear, but blurry, this could be the problem, i know when i was streaming to the ps3 it looked blurry

I have not tested the ps1 games, as yet, but to all intents and purposes remote play gives you a VNC/Remote assistance style connection to your PS3 (all processing etc is done on the ps3). Once you are connected via the PS you can press the Start button and there is additional options for bandwidth and other stuff I can't remember. I have tried it for videos and it makes a difference, so imagine the same for PS1 games.
