PS2 Classics speculation

Recently there's been a bit of speculation about some of the Playstation 2's back catalogue being released on the PSN alongside the PS1 Classics. Obviously nothing has been officially announced and this just remains hear say, rumor and speculation.

If this did come to fruition how would Sony implement it given that the emotion chip is removed from all models but the 60GB fat PS3? How would Playstation 2 games function on every other SKU? Would a software update allow this compatibility? And if it gives that ability to run PS2 games downloaded from the PSN then what's to stop someone just using their old PS2 discs in the machine seeing as it should theoretically run PS2 games? Also, do people think it would be a good move by Sony to do something like this considering that it seems mainly Disney are the only ones interested in releasing their back catalogue onto the PSN?

Discuss. :)

Probably done on a per-game download basis, like Xbox Originals, not one big patch that allows all games. Each game would need to be software emulated anyway, seeing as the hardware isn't in any recent SKU.

But can't the 360 also play original Xbox games from the discs? Although iirc not all original Xbox games are compatible with the 360.

This year PS2 will be 10 years old. The 10-year lifecycle is complete so they can start ditching it and unveil their software solution that they have kept under wraps... :D

I wish! :D

As long as it involves getting proper developers games up such as Konami, Capcom, Namco, and not bloody Disney studio's. I'm sick of seeing all the rubbish that's being put up as a PS1 "Classic". I'm sorry, but there's nothing classic about Hercules the game, or Antz for that matter. The film was **** and the games are worse. If this is to happen then get the big, popular names interested as well.

ff7 and 8 are about as good as it gets at the moment for ps1 classics.

Yep. I'm not a fan of RPG's but I can appreciate that Final Fantasy 7 and 8 are are as good as the PS1 Classics have so far gotten. Those, and Metal Gear Solid. I don't think there are any others games there that are even worth purchasing, Syphon Filter and possibly Destruction Derby 2 if it's up there. I've tried Command & Conquer: Red Alert Retaliation, but it just doesn't re-capture the magic of having two little CRT screens back to back and two Playstations hooked up with a link cable while your cousin beats you match after match every single Friday and Saturday. :(

Yep, fans are screaming out for Kingdom Hearts 3. So Disney woudnt be that bad if they released their backlog.

Wasn't it made by the Final Fantasy people? I understand it has Disney characters in it though. Also, 1 or 2 of their games are meant to be not bad, it's just all the generic film license filler crap that has made it onto the PSN though.

you will only be dissapointed if you care too much about the graphics. ive played mgs3 recently and absolutley loved it

must say i was shocked to see how many ps2 games hmv had in yesterday. i never even knew they still made them

infact the ps2 section was twice the size of the 'dance' music section

I'm actually in the middle of my MGS3 play through on my old PS2. I've just killed 'The End' by resetting the console, changing the date so it's a year ahead of what it used to be, and then re-loading the game. If you do that then 'The End' dies of old age so you don't need to spend ages sniping him. Epic. :D

A little off topic but hey, I can still enjoy games from last generation without worrying too much about the graphics.
