Hey all.

In the late 90s I had a PSX that had to have several new lasers and now my fat PS2 is having issues reading games.

I have read guides on how the laser can be tweaked but I just wondered if anyone has any PS2 spare sparts websites that they recommend, as most of them look like a 15 year old has created them in a weekend.

I would just go and buy a new PS2 but this one is modded and so I would like to fix it :).

EDIT: The prices on ebay vary wildly and I would be concerned that I would buy one that is cheap and would wear out quickly again.

You can try lowering the laser and bringing it back up again.

Just watch the ribbon when taking it apart. Worked for me for a few weeks, I broke mine using a dodgy pull out draw chip thing.

Would you recommend:
1) Replace the laser
2) Clean the laser
3) Tweak the laser by moving it i.e. move it closer to the disc (my release day PS2 laser used to scratch the discs and I had the console replaced 3 times)
4) Tweak the laser by upping the power of it with the dial on the back

I am thinking to do 2 and see if that works OK. If not I may as well do 4 but am a bit wary of doing 3. With 3, I had several buggered V3 PS2 consoles that would chew on the game disc. I eventually got a V4 that was OK but then that died a short time after I used a no-sodler modchip on it to eject the tray. I then bought a new PS2 in around 2004 but I am unsure what version it is - But that is no issue as I can get that checked.

In my experience - buy new console. I've bought two lasers - one was (my fault) slightly different and did not fit; the other fit perfect but just did not work. Messing about with gears/tuning the laser is tricky without proper tuning equipment.

Save money on laser replacements and just buy a new (NOS) console;)
