PS2 Problem - Can Anyone Help?

I've had this same problem before but after some dust blowing and tinkering inside, I managed to get my PS2 running smoothly again. However, after a few months of game play it decided to go balls up again with no amount of dust blowing or tinkering able to rectify things this time.

What happens is that it boots up, then continues to ask me to choose a language and time/date each time I turn it on. The system settings show the year as being 1999. It won't read any discs, and when I eject the CD tray it shoots out fast and jams, making a high pitched grinding noise. The tray retracts once I've turned the console off. It also only displays black and white video output. Hoping that it was a possible dead battery situation I replaced the CMOS cell today but to no avail.

The images below show the boot sequence if its any help:

I've tried googling for the same problem but have yet to find any useful material. If anybody can at least identify a possible source of the problem that would be great! :)

Thanks

Oops forgot to mention that she's an old chubby PS2, one of the first models. I've tried replacing the battery.

Any chance of resuscitating the old girl?

Sounds like there are a few problems, battery, video and your optical drive.

All I can say is fiddle with the DVD drive it's a little odd if it's shooting out like that. The first models of the PS2 always seem to of had the problems, if it was me I would get a new PS2 (slim, maybe?) or a second hand ones can be had on the cheap.

You can get a real cheap PS2 and swap bits round and try and fix it like that, if you're into that, but since the PS2's were dirt cheap (£50) I'd go for a new one.

All the problems occurred simultaneously which leads me to believe they are linked.

Totally regret not getting one of those new ones for £50 :(

Ta for the help anyway
