As mentioned in the Playstation Classic thread, where I had one on pre-order, I was talking it over with a friend who suggested just getting a PS2 instead and grab the games you want for a fraction of the price. After seeing the full game list I cancelled the order and started looking around on ebay to see what I could get.

I was after a later version in decent condition and ideally the silver edition as I think it looks better than black and is a bit more rare. After some searching I eventually picked one up which was in pretty good shape - there are some complete dogs out there, most look like someone has taken sandpaper to the top.

So this is what I got for £39 inc delivery:

PS2 Slim Silver, the last revision with the Sony remote, power pack, PS2 to RGB cable. Condition wise its very good. A few small marks which should clean up but generally tidy all round :) Also.. this thing is tiny!

Oh and it came with a bunch of games:

Excellent, onto testing... this is where the problems began :( Some of the games wouldn't load but the condition of the all the game discs are excellent, so it looks like a problem with the laser. It looks fairly easy to replace at a cost of £10 but first will just try taking the case off and cleaning it up inside. Secondly the left analogue stick seems to be stuck on. It feels fine but every game was flicking around the menu really quick and it only slowed down if you moved that stick against it. Again I will take it apart and post up the results. I wanted another controller so have one which works fine and also confirmed it before that using just the remote to control the PS2 without the original controller in.

I spoke to the seller and due to this agreed £16 back as it clearly wasn't in full working order. So total spend for the above is just £23 :) I didn't really want a project but looks like I have one now :p

Additions spent so far (inc del):
Second controller @ £10
Original 8MB memory card @ £2
GT4 @ £4
Wipeout Fusion @ £2

I also found a better monitor/TV to play this and the Amiga on. Originally I had the 15" LCD as per my Amiga thread but found locally on Gumtree an immaculate Samsung Syncmaster 17" LCD for just £10!

Quite a nice improvement and still the same size overall

So over the next week or so I will be taking the PS2 and controller apart and will post my findings. I've never owned a PS2 (or PS1) before never mind taking one apart so will be interesting :)

Any other PS2 fat/slim owners out there?

I took the controller apart but had no joy so ordered another original controller instead. I think the optical laser is working okay but will run through all the games again and see.

Got Tekken Tag Tournament on the way. Any other suggestions? Was thinking of Crash Bandicoot.

@Duke do your flat panel TVs have VGA input too? I've been thinking of getting something similar for my PS2 and it could replace my vga monitor too (hopefully). Are they native 640*480 (yay playstation) or 1024*768 (yay PC). I assume theyre progressive scan 60Hz too due to the tech?
I ditched the Dual branded one as it was a pile of poo so just using the Samsung SyncMaster 741MP. It has VGA :)

Full spec is here although it doesn't mention SCART for some reason - https://www.cnet.com/products/samsung-syncmaster-741mp-lcd-monitor-with-tv-tuner-17/
