PS2 - Which is the best model?

think i got mine about a year after they came out and it is still working pretty well, i have had to open it up twice though to give the laser lens a good clean to stop the evil disc read errors that cropt up now and a again :)

it has been tranported a lot in its life as well in carrier bags etc and very well used im actually amazed at how reliable it has been for me :)

Version 3 PS3s kept chewing discs (I had 3 in a row that did this) - These were the European release consoles.

I then had a version 4 (my 4th ps3 from SONY). This worked but was still had a loud drive.

I then killed my version 4 PS3 with a solder-free modchip - The console turned off and would never turn on again!

I then bought another ps3 - Version 6 iirc (only my 2nd purchased one) pre-chipped just before the big crackdown on pre-chipped consoles :)

I would just get a slim ps2 as they will have a much lower power consumption, so less heat and I assume less noise.

Sony did give me new free games, which were:

Tekken Tag Tournament, Ridge Racer and something else which I forgot (all were NAMCO games).
A replacement Timesplitters
A replacement Tekken Tag Tournament

I loved Tekken Tag Tournament but when my PS2 had to be sent off for a replacement I found that the one they sent me wouldn't play Tekken Tag, it wouldn't play any games which had the purple colour disks as opposed to the standard silver color. I never got to play TTT again. :(

The early models had issues where the infamous 'Disc read error' is displayed on the screen, either requiring a new laser arm or an adjustment of the laser height.

Picked up a SCPH-30003 model myself last week, looked perfect on the outside but displayed this error upon trying to load discs (PS2 games, PS1 games and DVD's). Found a guide after a quick Google on how to fix, half hour later and it was working again.

I think I read that Sony upgraded the laser etc on the Slimline version, so may be worth picking up one of those if true.

Purple colour was cd-rom, silver was dvd.
My version 3 and 4 ps2's where made a lot of noise, especially when playing purple (cd) ps2 games.

However no noise compares to my friends release-day 360:D.
