PlayStation 3 System Software Update v3.40 Available Soon

Posted by Eric Lempel // VP, Network Operations Americas

Hi everyone, once again we’re adding new features to the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system via firmware update to ensure we’re bringing you the best, most comprehensive entertainment experience possible. PS3 system software update (v3.40) will be available soon, adding the PlayStation Plus subscription, enhancements to the connection between your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts and more. Additionally, we’ll be launching system software update (v6.30) for the PSP (PlayStation Portable) system simultaneously with PS3 system software update (v3.40), adding PlayStation Plus compatibility as well as other new features.

We’ve gone ahead and provided a few highlights from PS3 firmware update (v3.40) below:

* PlayStation Plus: PlayStation Network users will be able to purchase membership to PlayStation Plus; a new subscription service on the PlayStation Network that provides you with new options to expand and enhance your gaming experience and enable you to gain an exclusive set of features and content. Friendly reminder, all of you PlayStation Network users will continue to have free access to PlayStation Network’s unmatched and expanding suite of new and exclusive features while PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive and expanding set of gaming features, content and functionality.
* Photo Gallery: A new network based photo sharing feature is now available on the Photo Gallery. The enhancement allows you to upload, browse and comment on photos on Facebook and Picasa Web Album. You can also opt to share your photos between your PlayStation Network friends as well as print photos from Photo Gallery.
* Video Editor & Uploader: Video Editor and Uploader is a new function found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which enables you to edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.
* Five Star Rating Support: Users can rate the PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.
* Power Save Settings: The default setting for PS3 System Auto-Off will be set at 2 hours, providing you with additional power save options and further improving power save features on the PS3 system.

In addition to the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PlayStation Network application on Facebook.com will be made available. This builds upon what was previously launched with Trophies and the ability to publish purchases from the PlayStation Store. Now you can further integrate your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts with this new application. The application allows you to display your PlayStation Network profile on your Facebook account, find out which of your Facebook friends have a PSN account and send them a PlayStation Network friend request, view your PSN friends’ online status and add the PlayStation Network application tab to your Facebook user profile.

I see they have "borrowed" some of the Facebook stuff that XBL has, I wonder if the video editor can be used for vids made from games?

Not many things that I'm excited about there to be honest, but at least they are additions. I don't see the auto power off thing being very handy for me personally. I only have 1 PS3 and if I'm not in front of it then it isn't switched on. Facebook additions are a bit mundane but additions are better than no additions.

Cool. update I think. Finally a half decent Facebook addition but still behind that achieved on the Xbox360 Im guessing. The PSN Store star rating is a nice addition though.

I'd rather they add some kind of streaming audio/internet radio support. The 360 has the edge in that respect for me, with its Last.fm functionality, but proper internet radio support would be utterly fantastic.

You can use Last.fm through the PS3 browser. :)

But without the slow-ass browser and through the XMB interface would be better. Some built-in program that allows for Internet radio streams, which can work in the background whilst you are playing games!

Course it will be no use for me since I don't really bother with all that, but for anybody else who enjoys it, it could be a good option.

Yeah I can see your point but I don't think it would be worth Sony's time developing some kind of "app" for Last.fm or similar when the browser already does it. I find the browser to be slow upon initial loading but then it soon picks up, I can't say that I've used it for a prolonged period of time though as I find navigating the Internet with a control pad to be an absolutely frustrating experience. :)

Update done and dusted..

Don't make it out like that feature is some sort of original idea that only microsoft have ever thought of. lol.

Everyone just wants a piece of facebook.

Why not just buy a radio or use your pc for last.fm? I don't understand why people want every little app on a console when other devices you probably already own (pc) do it just fine.

What's wrong with vidzone? Personally I am more likely to watch music vids on my tv, than listen to radio on it.

But that's a personal preference.

The 360's implementation is better though, it's far easier to use. In any case, it's internet radio that I really want, first to do implement it wins the prize, as far as I'm concerned!

Can't be done, MS have a patent on being able to play music in-game using the console's own music player.

Because my PC is in my spare room and my PS3...isn't. The PS3 already has a web browser and a music player, streaming audio isn't a million miles away from either of those. Why are you against it?

It's rubbish, you're limited to popular tracks that have music videos, which it just so happens pretty-much excludes everything I listen to. The ability to stream internet radio would be a far, far better feature.

Still waiting for them to add the ability to do a backup of all game saves to USB at the press of a button, or to allow you to multi-select saves to copy so you don't have to copy one at at time. I'd take something as 'simple' as that over all this fancy video editing crap anyday. :D

How big is the LBP download? Does it come pre-patched?

I'd like to see them turn off all those annoying tickers.. Maybe if i go with the premium + service.. I can't stand all these tickers and advertising.
