Right basically if i buy this: Asus VG236H 23" would it be compatible with 3D PS3 games when hooked up over HDMI?

Tried google with no luck.

Cheers.

^In case you were actually after a reason why.

Basically you need the active stereoscopic glasses which are not part of the PS3 but part of the TV. The Nvidia 3D Vision thing uses it own glasses and reciever. The reciever will not work on the PS3.

Ohh yeh also, i am not asking about using nvidia solution with the PS3.

It would be using the monitor @ 120hz with a different pair of glasses.

If i buy a 3D tv, would it be compatible with Nvidia 3D vision?

I currently use my tv as my monitor and switch when i want to play my consoles.

Ideally i'd like something that works with 3D on PS3 and PC.

It wont work.

As said, 3D TVs provide the glasses sync signal and PC monitors released so far don't support this. Also, 3D TVs are designed to accept "3D" signals in a variety of formats, frame-packed and frame sequential. A monitor will not be compatible with these.

possibly, possibly not, what type of 3d signal does the GFX card sned out, side by side, top an bottom or another ? most 3d tv's will do 3 types if conected correctly,

All 3DTVs will work with Nvidia's and Ati's new graphic cards.
The latest drivers are offering support for the HDMI 1.4 720p 3D Gaming Standard.
Its this standard that PS3 also supports and is in place to ensure compatibility and auto detection within games instantly making 3D work on your TV hardware whatever brand or model it is.

Whats Required?
This means if you have a compatible card, the appropriate drivers and a 3DTV then your 3DTV glasses will work no problems and without the need for Nvidia's own Nvision glasses.
It doesnt matter if its Plasma/LCD/LED all these will work the same.

For the PC market these 120Hz monitors of course can show 3D but not over HDMI and with auto detection between the card/monitor. However yes its now possible to get even triple screen working with compatible PC 3D eyewear like Nividia's own glasses. This method is also not limited to the 720p resolution which the HDMI spec supports even for PCs but this perhaps can be hacked to support full 1080p via PC and HDMI, it might depend if HDMI 1.4 can support 1080p @ 60 FPS in 3D and well I dont have the answer to that one.

No doubt people into their GFX and that own a 3DTV have maybe already tried to bypass the 720p resolution and get 1:1 1920x1080 with their PC games via HDMI.

@Mr Latte

If i understand correctly, if i get a 3D tv, it should work with the PS3 and PC, but i won't need to get the Nvidia kit?

That sounds great, and a decent saving if i don't the Nvidia kit.

The Nvidia kit is a receiver and a pair of glasses it is therefore not required if you have a 3DTV as 3DTVs have their own receivers for the glasses. Quite a lot of the 120Hz TFTs that are 3D ready are bundled with Nvidia 3D Vision as they do not have receivers. If you have a 3DTV all you need is a PS3 or for PC a compatible graphics card that can output 3D via HDMI.

I've got two 280's in sli, and hook them up to the tv via a DVI to HDMI adapter. Would that be ok?

I'm probably about 6-9 months away from getting a 3D tv, but i can't see myself upgrading my graphics cards in the next year or so.

I think Nvidia are charging for the appropiate drivers/software, something like that but yes you will not need their glasses.
Do some searches as Nvidia had teamed up with Panasonic in the USA at one point promoting this feature.

I dont think older cards support 3D via HDMI, no doubts Nvidia have a list available.
Youd also need a HDMI high speed cable, so look for one thats labelled as 1.4
