Hi my son wants a PS3 for christmas...now should I get him the 40 or 60?? As I understand it the 40Gb cant play PS2 games? this isn't a problem as we don't have any PS2 games so with that in mind any reason I should get the 60 over the 40 ??

Any real disadvantage in the 40Gb apart from the not being able playing PS2 is he likely to need 60Gb HDD.

Thanks for any help much appreciated

If he doesn't play PS2 games, He'd only lose out on 2 of the 4 usb slots and Media card slots. The console itself is actually quieter and cooler running as far as I've heard.

So the 40gb version sounds like your best choice

40gb is enough space. I'd still consider the 60gb model, there are some very good PS2 games that can be bought very cheaply. If PS2 games are absolutely out of the question then the 40gb will be fine.

a lot of people I deal with on a daily basis (work for a competitor) will go over backwards to try and get a 60GB solely because the 40GB does not offer backwards compatibility with PS2 games. If this is the case for you then try and get a 60GB I really do think it is worth the extra cash.

Aye the only we can source stock is to get them ordered in as Sony ceased production of the 60GB some time ago.

If you dont want backwards compatibility then save yourself *** cash adn get the 40GB. I doubt you will need to card reader, and the less USB ports will probably make no difference either. If you do need to the USB slots then go and buy a splitter for £10. Save yourself the money and buy the 40GB, eny extras can be bought anyways. If you feel the need for a bigger hard drive then an external can be bought for £70 or so with 300GB of storage.

You can, but as ive noticed when looking its a lot mroe expensive to buy a laptop hard drive to replace it with, than to just buy a external drive. Obviously it will be slower, but for what you use the PS3 for it shouldnt matter a huge amount as long as you dont use it for demos.

Depends what your doing i suppose, but yeah you would definately be better off buying a bigger HDD internally, albeit they are almost double the price.

see, thats why external drive + sata adapter = win. i got a 250gb 3.5" drive as my main 'internal' ps3 drive. i could easily stick a 500gb drive in for £60. its a no brainer.

Thanks for the help much appreciated, looks like it is the 40Gb then...I am off to place an order before I spend the money on somthing else :)

Thanks again

The 60GB PS3 can run PS1 games right ?

Reason I ask is i've got FF7 and FF8 here I bought justbefore I sold my PS2 to my brothers as theirs packed in as is always the case with there stuff so did'nt get to reply FF7 or play FF8 for first time so just woundering if a 60GB PS3 would play them as before I read the PS3 could run all PS games but I could'nt see anything mention PS1 games now just PS2.

The 40GB model is quieter, uses newer technology and is cheaper.

If PS2 games are that important then get a proper PSTwo or wait for the new smaller model next year, likewise if a 40GB drive isn't big enough for you then a 60GB one isn't going to be either.
