lo,

Does anyone have a PS3 hooked upto a AV Reciever via SPDIF cable. If so, does it play the audio for blu-ray movies in 5.1 Dolby Digital?

Just asking as my Receiver can only do DD/DTS/pro logic 2. It doesnt support the new HDaudio formats.

I use Optical to Coaxial converter, Coaxial to my z-5500 speakers and get 5.1 from my PS3.

Can u paste a generic picture of what this device looks like? My mate was after one of these, I was unable to find him an unpowered one (but that was ages ago), and I didn't know whether it would work for definite anyway.

If it is Dolby TrueHD then yes DD5.1. If it is DTS MA then it comes out as DTS 5.1. Both offer superior bit rates to DVD based DD5.1 & DTS tracks.

All of this is via spidf and it's the same via optical.

Hope this helps.

Mine is powered. Requires a plug.

Sorry to sound a bit n00bish but is SPDIF = Optical :o

I have my PS3 connected with an optical cable to my surround system and it plays Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 but if the optical connection is different to SPDIF then this info is useless :p

SPDIF is just a standard that is carried by either optical or coax. You were right to mention it though as I should have said coax & optical rather than spdif & optical.
