hi

having had my ps3 for just over a month ive been very happy with it , my question is , will the ps3 still be one of the best bluray players on the market now that bluray has won and that there will be more standalone bd players out there?

cheers

Can't see anything beating it tbh. Also with the PS3 getting regular firmware updates, it will only improve.
The PS3 is and will pretty much always be, their flagship BluRay player, i would be surprised if anything bests it by much.

It's definitely the most future proof blu-ray player currently on the market - as far as i know it's the only one capable of getting firmware updates so for example when 1.1 profile came about other blu-ray players weren't be able to take advantage of the new features whereas the PS3 just had a firmware update.

It's a good blu-ray player, better than most on the market and cheaper.

thanks ,perhaps i will get a remote for it now as i just cant get used to the games controller when watching films , i forget which button is pause,rewind.... ,and end up stoping the film completly

There already are better BD players than the PS3 out although they are far more expensive than a PS3, and less features (not including gaming etc). The one big advantage the PS3 has over most BD players is the firmware upgrades, think it will be one of the only profile 2.0 players available when the profile 2.0 BD's are out, even now many of the current BD players dont support profile 1.1. The only parts where the PS3 loses out is in the connectivity, only has HDMI and 1 optical out for surround sound, although its pretty quiet its not as quiet as some standalone players, also not having an infra red remote port is no good for those people with multi purpose remotes (all though im sure ive heard of a USB infra red remote that make work). In the end most of the negatives are very minor in regards to the positives and i cant see it being bettered by a similar spec and priced device for a while.

just press 'x' to pause/play. For any other features, RW/FF etc, just press the triangle button to bring up an on screen menu.

I think until some time next year, it's going to stay this way as well, there are profile 2.0 players coming out, and prices will gradually fall, but until those two combine to give us something cheaper then a PS3, you'd be mad not to get a PS3 for blu-ray playback.

When someone asks me what blu-ray player is the best value for money wise i always tell them a PS3, the explanation for this is that while other companies have to make their players to sell at a profit as it is the only significant profit they will get, Sony sell the PS3 at a loss as they're looking to make money from game sales and blu-ray disk sales. The result of this is that you get a machine that, if sold in the same manner as a standalone blu-ray player, would cost a large amount more than it does.

I got the blu-ray remote yesterday. Its !00 times easier than using the bloody joypad. Now I can actual call the menu system of the film !!!!

You just press square on the joypad to get the in movie menus.

how much did you get the BT remote for btw? I have been meaning to get one, if the price is right, if not just continue using the joypad.

While the remote is way oversized, it is a fantastic controller. Being bluetooth is such a good idea.

Alternatively Giotech do a very nice remote, very similar size and design to a mobile phone (plus lights up blue). The only drawback to it is that it comes with a docking station with in turn plugs into the USB port and then you have keep changing your contoller port as it takes port 1 automatically :-/

Otherwise it's a very nice remote :)

Depending how the dock works and if it is just for power, plug it in to your PC :D

It has HDMI output yeah?
Can it output Video via HDMI and the audio via optical at the same time?
