PS3 and it's Hard Drive

Dear Overclockerererers!

Recently, I've been thinking of getting a PS3 just because it has Gran Turismo 5 and lots of JRPG's.

I've been wondering though, whilst browsing the internet, some people have been known to fit in SSD's into their PS3's to knock off a fair amount of load times on certain games (GT5 being one of them, http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-ssd-halves-gt5-loading-times )...and to be fair, I've got a 2nd SSD just sitting doing nothing at this moment in time (was a replacement for a previous one that blew up...but ended up being inpatient and buying another one while it was being replaced).

With that particular train of thought, is there any sort of restrictions (Both SSD's and normal Hard Drives) that are in place? Particular file formats, hard drive size, SATA2,3 compatibility? RPM etc etc.

My friend says, I'm not likely to use 320gb, assuming I was to get that...but I'd like to explore my options.

Thanks in advance.

For the majority of games there isn't any benefit to installing an SSD but if you have one spare it won't hurt to put it in anyway. I think it has to be formatted as FAT32 and as Swagger posted it needs to be 2.5" but there's no reason why it won't work as long as it's SATA.

An SSD will work fine, the PS3 will format it to the file system it uses so it doesn't matter what file system it currently has or what's on it. You will need the latest system software on a USB stick though.

The performance improvement you get will depend on the game really. Downloaded games will perform noticeably better because they're already limited by the PS3 HDD, and you may see small improvements in games that use both a disc and a HDD install, but games that rely more heavily/solely on a disc obviously won't.

Still, if you've got the SSD handy then you may as well go for it.

Not many PS3 games have a full or big install. The only one I have is Everybody's golf which downloads a new version of the game and is about 8gb (you can't play online without doing this) most games install a couple of hundred MB or a gig if you're lucky. You can't manually do a full install like on the Xbox 360. Even though people say that the blu-ray read speeds are slow, plenty of PS3 games are huge. MGS4 is meant to be ~50gb and I think Uncharted 2 was the same. I think I read that Killzone 3 is about 37gb so using the disc is the only practical way really.

On a side note, I've always found it strange that people want a console with a HDD but then moan if a game wants to use it.

Any SATA laptop 2.5" drive will fit in a PS3. I assume this would go for SSD as well.
Only ones that arent taller than 9.5mm will fit - Im sure that still holds for the Slim aswell as the Phat...

Id also be worried about not having TRIM on the PS3 to manage the SSD speed/longevity...

its not worth putting an ssd in it, your better off selling it tbh.

its not even worth putting a 7200rpm drive in it, just get a 5400rpm disc which has large platters.

that review even states

In a world where PS3-compatible 2.5" laptop drives are dropping in price like a stone, the notion of spending around £200 for a 120GB SSD remains pretty ridiculous, but the tests do highlight how important seek times are, and if you're thinking of upgrading your PS3 hard disk, this is well worth factoring into a potential purchasing decision.

spending £200 to half loading times is far too much, you could get another ps3 for that.
