Not happy just turned on my PS3 Slim (using a 320gb HDD) and got the red screen of death

Had left it on this morning to dl demos off the PS Store and told it to auto shutdown when finished.

Just got back and got this red screen after bootup (after PS3 logo) saying Ive had a serious error and need to call Tech Support. Did a reboot by holding down power switch to turn it off and switch it on from there (used pad before) but had same screen!

Any ideas before I call Sony?

Bah as I posted this Ive got it working - switched it off using pad menu (hold PS button) and switched it on via pad and it's booted up ok. Just tried a reboot and its come back.

Should I worry? Tempted to go back to shop I got it from and replace it - only 2 months old. Gonna back it up now though...

I did have a YLOD but not a RSOD

If it happens again take a pic of the screen and try to get it swapped for a new one.

Unfortunately my PS3 has RSODed for the 2nd/3rd time last night (tried to switch it on straight after and had the same screen). This morning its the same and Ive attempted to restore the file system under the recovery menu twice without any change...

Any ideas what its complaining about? And any ideas how to attempt to fix it?

If I have to replace it Ill have lost all my save games which Im not really looking forward to redoing - unfortunately I havent backed it up this year so Ill be starting from scratch. Is there a way to reclaim authorisations?

As in currently my games are authorised against this PS3 so if I dont reclaim it thats another of the 5 authorisations I cant use

This is how I see it, if you get a new machine you can download them again but you lose one of the five authorisations as it is another machine.

But still, do you expect to have 6 different PS3's in your lifetime?

I think my rate is 1 a year at the moment - so if the PS3 isnt superseded in a few years then yeah - it will be an issue soon - far more than people actually consider...

Tried the rebuild the database but it doesnt even attempt to start - just reboots out of the recovery menu back into the RSOD - truly and utterly owned :p

If you have given up you can also try a different harddisk (if you have one off course) to see if it is harddisk related?

Just saw this thread. This is a hardware issue (nothing to do with the HDD). Happened to me, just inside of warranty so swapped for new unit. Kissed goodbye to game saves, bit gutted, over it now.

I believe Sony helpline can get your authorisations reset, assuming you have all the details you entered when creating the account.

Its seems to be related to either a bad FW flash (which I havent done since the last update) or the actual NAND flash breaking (seems most likely).

Im not too worried - I have extended warranty with the shop I bought it from so I should be able to swap it (after Ive put the old HDD back in). Ill then wipe my existing 320Gb HDD and just do tests on it to make sure its ok before I put it back in. I might ask though if I can pay a bit extra and get the 250Gb PS3 version, though Im actually considering this might be time to move over to 500Gb+ HDD (I use Play TV a lot)...

Its not a major inconvenience since I so rarely actually get anywhere with games - Im sure I wont be saying that once I have it replaced and realise what saves I have lost. Might make me a bit more pragmatic regards completing games in a defined time and backing up more...

EDIT: Actually are the 120Gb Slims even sold anymore? Think its 160/320 now...

Had a result from Sony - even though its out of warranty they are willing to do a doorstep exchange tomorrow.

The only problem is that will this affect my GS extended warranty that I bought? I only thought to ring Sony to get an idea of the issue and therefore any possible retort if GS decided they would attempt to repair it first before replacing it (as per their warranty conditions - I basically thought that if its not repairable as far as Sony are concerned then I could instruct GS the same).

Do you think Ill have any problems with the extended warranty carrying over (I doubt they took a serial number) and do you think I should go to GS and maybe argue that as Sony will swap it on the doorstep they should do the same (and bag a brand new PS3 rather than a refurb with the 3month Sony warranty)?

Sorry I resurrected an old post on this - I bought it at the start of Sept 2009 - so when I first got the RSOD it was only months old. Now its terminal and obviously just out of its warranty...

EDIT: Been told by the nearest GS store that even if Sony swap it out the warranty still holds!
