Can i just ask why everyone says how brilliant the ps3 is as a media centre?

There are quite a few threads where people already have 360's and are tempted by the ps3 and people say it is an excellent media centre,

The ps3 sucks as a media centre, the 360 looks much better when upscaling and it's playlist options are far more sensible,

My ps3 does a decent job but my 360 just does it better,

One of the reasons i bought the ps3 was for it's media capabilities but it does nothing other than blu-ray that my 360 doesn't do better

Before everyone starts to complain this isn't just fanboy trolling as i actually use my ps3 more than my 360 at the moment, i just want to know why people make these claims
 
Can your 360 play MPEG 1 or 2 or AVCHD? No. There's one advantage of the PS3. Can your 360 store your own video on its internal drive? No. There's a second.
 
With a PS3 you have the option of installing Linux and using it to play just about any kind of file or codec imaginable. If the hypervisor would allow access to the video hardware for XvMC to use you could even run MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) stuff at full HD resolution.

It's a great media centre, the console is whisper quiet, the xmb is extremely simple to navigate and blu-ray is great. Everything plugs in snugly to the back of it and I haven't had one problem with it.

Most non HD downloads off the Internet play fine it. It is also very easy to update the hard drive for cheap in the future when the TV/Film service launches. The only problem I would say is that there is no 5.1 across the XMB bar yet.

As for playlists I don't really see the reason for video playlists? If I'm going to watch 2 episodes of Lost in a row it doesn't really bother me having to come out and hit the next one once in 2 hours.

I don't see why the 360 is better as a media centre, it's too noisy and I don't like the GUi as much as XMB.
 
I'm very pleased with the way I have my PS3 streaming from TVersity to be honest. I don't need feel the need for playlists, and TVersity will do the scaling for me if I need it to.

Very strange, I have used both media centre functions extensively and find the ps3 one much better.

The ps3 can traverse through media much faster than the 360. Stick 200 mp3s in a folder and try.

Also I have an external NAS unit that works with the 360 and ps3 and the ps3 plays back many more of the files than the 360 (but ovbviously this varies per user)

Everything I have read from professional sites, AV buffs etc says the ps3 is a better (by a long shot) upscaler than the 360. (I do not use this feature much so can't say what my personal experience is).

Also what about noise? Surely the biggest factor for a living room media centre no?

PS3 is a far superior dvd upscaler ....... av tests carried out on both systems showed that the ps3 was one of the best, while the 360 was barely a decent dvd player ...nevermind upscaler.


The basis of your thread substance seems to centre around it dvd upscaling ability ...... what TV have you got? , is it configured correctly?


On my 1080p bravia ..... the ps3 is light years ahead of the 360 when it comes to upscaling and even divx playback.


And for audio playback ( its a section of media, ain't it? ) ...... there is no contest either, again the ps3 is fantastic when it comes to audio output.


360 it can be argued is the better machine at the moment for games ...... but at no time is the 360 a better multimedia machine.
 
yup for me too I had the 360 since decemeber and only recently bought the PS3 along with my 32" sammy. My DVD player is now defunct as the PS3 upscaling is superb and it doesn't sound as if someone is drying their hair in the room either.

Sorry I'm no fanboy but it's no wonder Xbox have lowered their prices in order to compete.
 
whenever i upscale dvd's on the ps3 it sounds louder than the dyson, and i have my ps3 through hdmi and the 360 through vga and everything looks pixelated on the ps3 (when upscaling) but the 360 looks crystal clear on either vga or hdmi, even the GF commented on the poor quality of the ps3 and she isn't interested in the slightest
 
something is not right there buddy ...... will try and get a few pics up tomorrow .... ain't got none of those issues.

MIght be your settings on the ps3.

Have you got 1080i ticked in your settings? Stick to 720p or 1080p (the max your TV can handle) might help?

The best camera i have in the house is my n95 atm, will try and get a decent comparison up tomorrow but the phone might not show the differences, the ps3 looks truely horrible in comparison, i don't want people to think i am a fanboy either, i love my ps3
 
Got a 360 and PS3 and would say the upscaling is superior on the PS3 by a country mile, plus it doesn't sound like a jet engine. Got mine connected to a 1080p Sammy M86 and more than happy with it. Not tried the other media functions yet and annoyingly the PS3 won't see my PC's Mediaplayer yet but that could be down to Norton(though the 360 saw it fine)

I agree with the others here - your settings defo need looking at.

Your PS3 is broke. Seriously if my PS3 ramped up its fans everytime I put a DVD in it would be back at the shop immediately.

Quiet play is one of the PS3's strong points if you are having to listen to the fans on full power take it to the shop and get a replacement.

Upscaling on my PS3 is way better than my DVD Recorder connected with a good quality Component cable and as said DVD's on a 360 are not good at all even without upscaling :confused:

I can't comment on the other media center capabilities but maybe it is just that you prefer the 360's interface?
 
the one thing about the PS3 is that it does need breathing room - Im no expert on the X360, but if the PS3 is closed in then fans do get considerabl louder (mine is whisper quiet - right in front of the tv)
 
I stream files from my NAS using Twonkymedia to both my PS3 and 360.

My PS3 isn't the quietest of the bunch, it will get to *level 3* fan when its warm but my 360 has delta fans, ugh, so the PS3 wins when choosing what to watch/listen to something on.

Sometimes I will use the 360 if I happen to have it on for a game or the PS3 is folding but I prefer using the PS3.

The exception to this is TV, I am shackled to the 360 via the WMCE box that does our TV recording, we watch hardly anything live so the TV's tuner doesn't get used, it all comes from the WMCE box via the 360.

edit: I used to think the 360 was the *winner* because of the TV but now I see it as a burden.
