Hi,

So what is the concensus is the PS3 a good Blu-Ray player, I'm in the market for a Blu-Ray player and I want to know if they PS3 is the best option.

Thanks

HEADRAT

I've watched four films on my PS3 so far. The first one, Stealth, wouldn't play at all. Don't know if it's an incompatible title or just a duff disc. The other three all played perfectly. I'm very pleased with it. DD5.1 sound output is fine, too.

they're not bad apparently

i think the major thing is going to be all the advances comming in Blu Ray Players that the PS3 is going to miss out on

In case you hadnt noticed, blu-ray and HD-DVDs are no longer being sped up to 60hz for PAL TV. They are being shipped at their native 24fps and the DVD players are having to do a process called 3:2 pulldown to display them at 60hz

normally this was done during the digitisation process by the film company, but thats stopped now, and this pulldown produces quite noticable motion judder on fast moving action scenes. Pioneers bluray player is going to support 1080P24 support, as is Sony's First European Blu Ray DVD player.

its stuff like this that the PS3 isnt going to do, but its by no means a bad player.

I am more than happy with the PS3 as a Blueray player, although I don't have a great deal to compare it with. The only other experience I have was when getting a demo for my TV in the store. The guy plugged in an imported Sony BD player and ran Open Season. I was suitable impressed and it went a long way to make my mind up on the TV.
Comparing the PS3 to it, I can defintely say that it seems every bit as good as the stand alone Sony player but to be fair, I haven't seen Open Season on it yet.
Both Kingdom of Heaven and Casino Royal are jaw droppingly good on the PS3.

Edit: MrLoL has a point about it probably not living up to players that are on the Horizon now, but it certainly makes a good and cost effective entry into the world of BD at the moment.

You would have thought a firmware update would bring it up to date?

Plenty of horse power under the hood.

I'm hoping to do the same thing.

it's possible. whether they will or not is another matter. they may decide to keep these features exclusive to the standalone players, to give people a reason to buy them. After all, why have the PS3 with exactly the same features as your top end stand alone blu ray players but for half the cost ?

So you think a major player like Sony/Columbia/MGM will completely mess (I was going to use a swear word) a million customers (all people within europe) within 6 months of launch - if its a big thing (I dont know whether everyone actually sees this judder or whether its upto your own eyes or how big the screen is etcetc) either Sony release it and get the expected sales of the software or they alienate every ps3 owner who is interested in movies

To my mind its too big a risk - but you never know...............

The ps3 can't output 720p so no I don't think it's good for the purpose. It can't do 1080p over component either. Also it doesn't have coax, or analogue 5.1, or vga.

yeah and others cant? i dont really see 1080p component as a necessity. any samsung that'll do 1080p over component would no doubt do it over HDMI which is the preferred output on the ps3 anyway.

Jeez I was only saying, in case that was an issue for the op, ie only 1 hdmi port.

come on though Energize, you have so many bad things to say about the ps3 as a bluray player, let alone a games machine, yet 99% of those problems arent an issue for people that own one. Thats all im saying, you just seme to find some many things to complain about lol

Yeap i was actually wondering if this would make a PS3 the better choice in the long run. Its firmware can be/is updated regularly and easily. Firmware updates on a stand alone player, while not usually a difficult task, is one that you probably wont find out about, unless you keep your ear to the ground. Also you know the PS3 is going to get system updates for what 7-10 years, i doubt many stand alone ones will be supported that long.
I only have a couple of movies on Blu-Ray, and i have the PS3 Blu-Ray remote, and to be honest, i have no idea why i would need to buy a stand alone player.

i dont think you could call them messed

all blu ray and DVD players released currently dont feature this technology

its a new one that's not even been implemented yet. Customers could hardly call themselves 'shafted' by not having had it

but its subtle improvements that will come over the lifespan of the media, that owners will miss out on by not having a standalone player.

I have 4 Blu-Ray movies that I've watched on the PS3 :)

All in all I really think it's an excellent player and haven't noticed any slowdown when watching movies.. so can't comment on that, but I got the PS3 as a player primarily and couldn't be happier.

But surely it's much easier to update a PS3 than it is a standalone player?

I think some players have ethernet, or at least will have in the future for firmware updates. I believe it's mandatory on hd-dvd players.

yes

but whether they will or not is another matter

i dont think they will let the PS3 have the same features as their top standalone players. Yes it will play DVDs well, but it will never be as good as their standalone players

we'll see though. i may be prooved wrong, but why have a blu ray player for £800 when you can buy a PS3 for £400 that does the same ?

sony arent stupid.
