ps3 as media centre

You can't install Windows on it, you can't stream files off a network drive and you can't play DIVX files so as a media center it sucks :p

Becuase he wants to fuel an argument obviously.

:( If I'd wanted to do that I'd have pushed it, I will admit a smilie or two should have been in my first post though :o sorry.

Looking around, people are trying to get MythTV working on the PS3 but really with its limited internal storage and lack of a tuner the ps3 is pretty much limited to being an extender to a dedicated media center.

There isnt exactly a sea of linux uPnP clients for Windows Media Center and even if there were it still wouldnt have the level of interaction a 360 or a dedicated extender would have with WMCE, sorry.

edit: no strikethrough !

Linux doesn't have any wireless drivers yet. But PS3 as a media centre pretty must sucks arse.

Drivers for YDL are in testing at present.
As soon as these are released I'll be going the Linux way too. Coupled with a larger hard disk and Linux/VLC I see this has great potential to be a HD Media Center.

What you can do is convert your video files to a format the PS3 supports by using this program: http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ps3video9/

Then put the file on a USB stick and use that to copy it to the PS3.

If you can go to the bother of re-encoding your files to MP4, then the PS3 is quite a sweet media center.
I am lucky i have a spare laptop, it isn't the fastest encoder in the world (its an Athlon 64 3400) but it is quite so i leave it encoding over night and it isn't an issue. Means when i go to bed, i can watch what i have on my HDD and not have to have the TV up over the noise of a console and PC.
The 360's media center is quite nice, but tbh i find myself encoding more for my PS3, than using the media center on the 360, as when i am streaming, because transcode 360 is running, it pretty much ties up my main PC which is a pain.

PS3 as a media center is terrible. The 360 has much better capabilities at the moment, particularly with respect to streaming media off PCs and such.

It's better but it's not great, as an Extender it's severly limited by shoddy codec support and crippled software. If the 360 worked like a normal MCE extender then it would be great, noisy but still great.

The PS3 also has crap codec support, and when you have lots of videos it's file system is to basic.

But it does have a bigger harddrive, and the ability to install Linux so in the future it should be pretty good.

That's why I've taken the 360 out of the lounge and put the PS3 there instead. When some teams have worked on a Linux Media Center (which won't take long as it's quite a big prize) that can play HD movies, DVD images and your usual Divx/Xvid then we'll be talking. Basically if they wrote Xbox Media Center for it then that would be pretty much perfect.

Sony have left this console wide open with the ability to install Linux and I think this feature will be a big seller once a media center OS is available. This is the main reason I bought an original XBOX. I bought a 360 hoping that the same would happen, but alas 18 months later and nothing. PS3 supports additional OS's out of the box, something that will never happen with a 360. I've always been a 360 Fan and originally discounted ever owning a PS3, but after reading about what different teams were already developing and what they were aiming for I made a decision and traded the 360 for a PS3 and am currently very happy with my purchase. It's not better and it's not worse. It's the same, I just see more potential in this system in the long run than the one I traded in.

Things are still very early at this stage, but I'm sure that within a year a full HD media center will be available for the PS3.
