PS3 as media hub

Just my 2p worth.

When I ordered my PS3, I was looking forward to using it's media centre capabilities.

I really don't bother any more.

I was looking forward to having a server loaded with video goodness, my photo collection, and music.

To be fair, I do use the PS3 to wirelessly access photos when people are visiting, as it's quick, effortless (once set up) and the slideshow modes are nice.

I gave up on video almost immediately.
The lack of XviD/DivX is frustrating.

Worse, if you want to enjoy HD material, the net seems to favour .mkv files.
The PS3 doesn't seem to like these at all either, despite being h.264.

You can run them through PS3 Video 9, which doesn't have to reencode them, I gather it changes the header or something? So you can watch them on the PS3 then (only in stereo) but that's just another hoop to jump through.

If the PS3 could play more formats, then I'd use it, but like others, I've taken the route of plugging a PC into my TV, which can therefore handle everything.

I hope in the future it will support XVID and MKV files, but for now, I personally couldn't recommend it as a media centre system.

For bluray however.... :D

V1N.

The best smallest quietest, most compatible media centre style PC ever is....a Mac Mini + Perian (codecs) + Remote Buddy (GUI).

I have a fastish PC, a 360, a PS3 but nothing beats the mac mini for ease of use, compatibility and noise (3 most important factors). Plays any DVD, streamed content, xvid/divx mkv etc.

Best of all you can control the whole system with a tiny 6 button remote.
