I've never really used my ps3 until I got GT5 so this may have been happening ever since I got the machine.

Basically the audio just seems to cut out or go really crackly during "intense" moments. For instance, when I have an accident against a wall or another car the audio seems to go beyond the range and starts to crackle/go quiet. Also, when viewing replays/watching online and a car goes through a tunnel the audio cuts out all together.

I have changed HDMI ports on the tv and I've tried another cable but it still does the same so I'm concerned it's the ps3 itself, is this a common problem as google has a view instances but nothing concrete that I can see.

For reference, my headphones are connected via an extension cable to the tv, the ps3 is connected via HDMI. My xbox is connected via the component cable to the TV and that doesn't have a problem.

PS3 is a non-slim.

I some times get this running through optical. Have you turned the in game audio down? try to 50% then boost the tv and see if it still happens.

Oh dude, I think that's cracked it! So they've basically set the gain too loud in the game, that's just stupid.

1 Internet cookie for you :D

All games seem to have different audio out levels, you mostly notice it when using headsets more than tv speakers/AV amps. I especially notice it using the Astro mix amp.

Not really an isolated GT5 problem its just that there is no actual "this is 100% output volume in game and will be the same for alllll games", a good example I found on the PS3 with a headset was going from MW2 -> GOW3 lets just say thanks PS3 now I'm deaf.
