I bought an optical cable for my PS3 to connect it to my AV amp on Friday and when I hooked it all up yesterday much to my disappointment I got no sound! Not on the main PS3 menu, not in any games and not in any films.

The cable itself is fine (I assume) as I'm using it for my 360 as well and it works fine on that, I've made sure I've changed the settings on my PS3 for the sound to go out via optical so I'm stumped as to what the problem is

After doing some googling I've found countless sites with others with similar issues but have never got to the bottom of it so do any of ocuk's finest have any idea's?

Please don't tell me there's a problem with the console itself...?

have you tried using it on the same optical input as the 360? assuming the amp has more than one optical input, that is:)

cant think why you wouldnt get sound. is the red diode lit up on the ps3's optical port? if not it might be faulty, but i cant see it being that.

you've double checked the sound setting, thats fine. did you set it up using the automatic option or manual? if you went with automatic, try manual and play around with the format options and see if that works.

Using the same optical input as I am for the 360 (the cable is going to be used for both)

The optical LED does indeed light up when the consoles on so don't think there's a problem there.

Lastly yep played about with all the settings and all the different variables and still nothing.

had a quick look on the net and found this.

In Audio settings, Optical, check all three formats (I think they're Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5,1, and something like "AAC").
- In BD/DVD Settings, change the BD Audio Format to Bitstream (not PCM).

Have a look at this and see if it helps.

Yep done ALL of that and made no difference
