Nope. They need to recoded to MPEG-4 or H.264.

What version of linux is the easiest to use on the PS3 and will it connect to the internet on the ps3's wireless without looking for drivers ect? Also does anyone have a guide for installing said linux distribution on the PS3.

Yellow Dog Linux is popular, however as of now, no, wireless will unfortunately not work.
There is a guide on here for it somewhere.
